6 North Shore Towers Courier n September 2013 COURIER’S HEALTH EXPO PROVIDES  KEY INFO ON WELL BEING BY MAGGIE HAYES Once again, residents of the North Shore Towers were able to get vital information on their well being as The Queens Courier hosted its Health and Financial Fitness Expo. “Part of our world is to bring to you the people that are on our pages,” said Victoria Schneps, publisher of The Queens Courier and over a dozen other publications. Ronald Fatoullah, estate and elder law attorney, was “back by popular demand” as the event’s keynote speaker. He touched on the five essential documents that all seniors should have. First is a last will and testament to make sure “your assets go to the right people,” he said. Next, everyone should have a power of attorney to make sure an entrusted person can act and plan on your behalf. Additionally, seniors should have a health care proxy, because, as Fatoullah said, it’s “simple, but powerful.” The proxy is an appointing document in which you choose who can make health care decisions for you if you cannot make them. Seniors should also have a living will, and lastly a living trust or testamentary trust in a will to protect assets from predators. Other speakers included Martha Wolf from the Parker Jewish Institute for Health Care and Rehabilitation, who spoke about “the new face of dementia,” and signs of early onset Alzheimer’s. Bonita Waites from the Nerken Center also spoke about Alzheimer’s and its warning signs, which range from difficulty in completing familiar tasks, to decreased or poor judgment, to confusion with time or place. Phyllis Ettinger, president and CEO of Royal Health Care Services, gave her 10 tips on how to live to be 100. She advises to not smoke, build physical and mental activity into your daily life, take multivitamins, maintain a healthy weight, build a strong social network, engage in mental challenges, protect your eyesight and hearing, and see both your dentist and your doctor regularly. “Everything is helpful,” said Elna Tullock, attendee, of the event. “I feel at home, I’m having a ball. All of the vendors are pleasant, enthusiastic and professional.” Dr. Allison Hoffmann from Advanced Hearing Center spoke about the importance of checking your hearing and addressing any issues, and Dr. Perry Frankel, cardiologist and lipidologist from St. Francis and North Shore LIJ Hospitals, covered strokes, heart attacks, accidental falls and more. Frankel and his team also provided attendees first with questionnaires to determine if they were at risk for a heart attack or stroke, and if so, conducted further “targeted” tests to determine any artery blockages or inner ear imbalances. Karen Taylor from Aetna Insurance spoke to the crowd about medicare and the 2014 Medicare Part D program, detailing changes and a decrease in deductibles and other charges. The annual enrollment period for next year will go from October 15 through December, and any changes in coverage will be effective as of January 1, 2014, she said. Last, mobile specialist Carl Surface of Bussani Mobility provided solutions designed to keep individuals independent, and mobile, within their community, such as options that Bussani provides to get people driving again. Vendors ranged from acupuncturists to insurance companies, including New York Life, who went to the Expo to relay information about the company’s long-term care and annuities. “It’s not just about insurance, it’s about retirement, it’s about inheritance, it’s about legacy,” said CJ Bocklet.
