Poolside 1–4 p.m. Clown for the Kiddies – 2 p.m. Ice Cream by the Pool - 2:30 p.m. Bingo is back! - 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept 10th, 2013 Video Presentation….”Roy Orbison and Friends – A Black & White Night” 8 p.m. – VIP Room Singer Roy Orbison performs in a 1940s-type nightclub setting. Male background vocalists, some of whom also joined in on guitar, were Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, and Steven Soles. The female background vocalists were k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes, Cindy Bullens and Bonnie Raitt. During the end credits, several of the band members are shown talking about how Orbison influenced them. The song “Oh, Pretty Woman” from this performance, which features dueling guitar solos between Springsteen and Burton, was nominated for a Grammy Award for best live performance. Thursday, Sept 12, 2013 Composer, Jimmy Roberts 8 p.m. – VIP Room Jimmy Roberts is a composer for the musical theater as well as a pianist and entertainer. His musical scores include: I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change (1996) and The Thing About Men (2003), both with book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro. “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” nominated for Best Musical by both the Outer Critics Circle and the Drama Desk, became the second-longest running Off Broadway musical in theater history (6,000 performances). “The Thing About Men” was voted Best Musical of the 2003/2004 season, by the New York Outer Critics Circle. His children’s musical, “The Velveteen Rabbit” toured the United States for a decade, and he contributed individual songs to two other Off Broadway revues, “A . . My Name is Still Alice” and “Pets!” As a pianist and performer, Jimmy Roberts devises programs that blend classical and popular music (including Gershwin and Broadway), comedy and song. He has appeared at Merkin Concert Hall, the Time Warner Center, the 92nd Street Y, Steinway Hall and the “Music at Meyer” series in San Francisco. Tuesday, Sept 17, 2013 Towers Short Film Festival 7:30 p.m. – Towers Cinema A selection of five films will be shown at each of the two festivals. Discussion with guest film-makers will follow each showing. Admission will be honored by reservation only! A flyer will be delivered to each resident’s apartment in the near future containing information on how to reserve your seat. Thursday, Sept 25, 2013 92nd St. Y Program…… This month’s selection “Barbara Walters with Dr. Gail Saltz” followed by a discussion led by Fred Chernow 7:30 p.m. – Towers Cinema Over the course of her career, Barbara Walters has interviewed a wide range of statesmen and stars. After 25 years as co-host and chief correspondent for 20/20, Walters left the show in 2004 to begin a new phase in her extraordinary career. She remains an active member of the news division and is well known for her “Barbara Walters Specials.” She joined ABC News in 1976 as the first woman ever to co-host the network news. She is the author of the best-seller Audition: A Memoir. Psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, columnist, bestselling author and television commentator Dr. Gail Saltz will interview Walters as part of her series “Strength of Mind with Dr. Gail Saltz.” This series explores how people find success, real happiness and the ability to deal with life’s problems.
