Attend the 40th Anniversary
UJA Fundraising Gala
The Brooklyn College Alumni
gathered on June 19 for an informative
and thoroughly enjoyable
presentation of "The
Million Dollar Gift." Ceil
Berman, an origamist,
gave a short history of
this ancient art form and
showed videos of how origami
folds have influenced
outer space exploration
and medicine.
Origami has also influenced
the development
of the air bag, improved
the Kevlar shield for law
enforcement, and inspired
architecture and fashion.
Finally, Ceil gave a hands-on lesson in
origami. Each person was taught how to
make an envelope and heartshaped
bill to give as a gift.
The Alumni will gather
on Wednesday, July 17, at
10:30am in The Coleridge
Lounge. The Topic: "In Our
Neighborhood, The Merchant
Marine Academy - What Is
Their Mission?"

Leaving a Legacy for Future
Generations
BY SUSAN BARTELSTONE
DR. STANLEY GOLDSMITH
I n 1 9 5 4 ,
James Madison
High School
senior Stanley
Goldsmith was
looking forward
to college and a
bright future. The only trouble:
affording it! Advisers steered
him to The Jewish Philanthropic
League of New York which awarded
him $1,000 ($9,520 in today’s
currency) over a four year period,
enabling him to pay all his housing
expenses at Columbia University.
For years afterwards, Goldsmith
said, even though he had very little
money starting out, he donated
$10 a year to the League (until he
could afford more), so they could
help others in need.
The Jewish Philanthropic
League, an arm of the Federation
of Jewish Philanthropies, ultimately
merged with the United
Jewish Appeal to become the
UJA-Federation of New York.
On August 25th, at its 40th
Anniversary Fundraising Gala,
the North Shore Towers-UJA
Fundraising Committee is honoring
Dr. Stanley Goldsmith for
his 50 years of pioneering work
in the field of Nuclear Medicine,
numerous honors from prestigious
organizations worldwide, and contributions
to the global movement
for the peaceful use of radiation.
The legacy that UJA helped put
in motion back in 1954 has come
full circle!
SHIRLEY WERSHBA
I n 1 9 4 3 ,
Shirley Wershba,
another pioneer,
started a 40-year
career as a journalist
in newspapers,
radio and
TV. She worked at ABC, PBS
(MacNeil/Leher Report) and
several stints at CBS, meeting her
husband Joe there in 1945, and
becoming a producer and writer
for top shows like 60 Minutes. So
important was their role at CBS
that she and Joe were portrayed in
the George Clooney movie, Good
Night, and Good Luck, which
chronicled Edward R. Murrow’s
and Fred Friendly’s stand against
McCarthyism and Communist
paranoia. “I’m so flattered to be
honored by UJA,” Wershba said.
“You do what you can to make
a better world. Few women had
broadcast journalism jobs in those
days and I’m delighted to leave
this legacy.”
JUDY LEV
The thi rd
honoree is Judy
Lev, Senior
Vice President
for We a l t h
Management at
Morgan Stanley,
who’s worked tirelessly on behalf
of cancer survivors. In 2018, she
helped the NST chapter of Babes
Against Cancer raise $70,000 and
is also involved in the work of the
Jewish Women’s Foundation, the
American Heart Association, and
the Adelphi University Women’s
Giving Circle. “I’ve received
charitable awards in the past,
but I’m particularly gratified
to be receiving an award from
UJA-Federation, and especially
at North Shore Towers where I’ve
lived for 40 years. Couldn’t be a
nicer honor,” Lev said.
UJA-Federation of NY is an
international lifeline for people
of all faiths, races and ethnicities,
with more than 70 partner
organizations worldwide. It
provides services like emergency
cash assistance, mental health
counseling, and legal assistance
to isolated, vulnerable individuals
(especially seniors and those with
special needs); and fun, sports
and educational activities for
all ages.
Eneas Arkawy, Chairperson
of the NST-UJA Fundraising
Committee, said, “Every year,
we hold a Gala to honor noteworthy
NST residents and raise
money to help UJA continue its
vital work. This year’s honorees
exemplify service to others and
leave a lasting legacy for future
generations.”
