That was the theme of
the May meeting of the
University Club, when
the audience was introduced to
Number 127369. That was Ivy
Woolf-Turk’s name during her
three years in Danbury Prison.
A former executive in the advertising
and real estate businesses,
she found herself caught
up in a situation with criminal
consequences.
She has learned much and has
shared much about incarceration,
homelessness, and reentry. While
in prison, she taught English as a
second language, yoga and meditation
and prepared inmates for
High School equivalency tests.
Today, she is the founder of Project
Liberation, where she works with
women across all stages of criminal
justice involvement.
She has lectured at institutions
all over the country, but her
favorite moment was at the White
House when Michelle Obama
hugged her and urged her forward.
Ivy spoke about living on the
bottom of a bunk bed in a seven
by-seven cubicle, having to
wear men’s clothes and shoes, and
about women being deprived of
every feminine necessity. By the
time she opened up the Q&A period,
there were not enough tissues
in the room to dry the tears on
the faces of both audience and
lecturer.

North Shore Towers’
“Babes & Guys Against
Cancer” fundraiser is
all set for Thursday, July 11. The
event centers on a golf tournament
and, of course, card games for the
many who prefer to keep cool indoors.
A donation of $85 covers
all of the day’s activities, which
will also include a luncheon and
raffle drawings.
“I have to thank our volunteers
who worked very hard to get our
raffles from shops, beauty parlors
and other stores,” said NST resident
Irma Marcus, this year’s Chair of the
event. “We also received gift cards
from a lot of restaurants, many of
which generously donated upwards
of $100,” she added. Participants
can also sponsor a hole for $100
or purchase a “Tree of Life Leaf”
for $10. “The tree brings people’s
attention to the cause,” Irma said,
“and the leaves have the name of
the donor’s loved one on them. It’s
really very nice.”
For those who may think that
this drive is just once a year, it’s
important to know that Babes
Against Cancer, as the organization
is commonly known, is active
year-round and raises more than
$1 million annually through the
hard work of approximately 300
volunteers on Long Island. Forty
golf and country clubs on the
Island are part of the effort, and
approximately 7,000 Long Islanders
participate. Overall, since its inception
in 1972, Babes Against Cancer
has raised more than $24 million
to support the American Cancer
Society’s research, public education,
advocacy and patient/family
services programs in the areas of
breast and prostate cancers.
Remember: You don’t have to be
a member of the Country Club to
participate! So if you haven’t signed
up already, do it now. You’ll be
contributing to a vitally important
cause and enjoying a fun-filled day
at the same time!
