MEN’S CLUB NEWS
This article was written on
March 20, but most likely you
will not be reading it until on
or about the first of May. I can only
wonder where the epidemic will have
led us by then.
At this point it appears as though
the time period before we overcome
this virus will be lengthy. This is a
battle the likes of which many of us
have never seen in our entire lives.
A few weeks ago, the North Shore
Towers Board wisely scheduled a
meeting to address the Coronavirus
crisis. The meeting was addressed by
Board President Fred Chernow, Dr.
Stanley Goldsmith, General Manager
Glen Kotowski, and Dr. Gabriela
Solis Ramirez of Northwell Health.
Dr. Solis Ramirez, being an expert
in the field of infectious diseases,
explained many of the precautions
we should be taking to win the battle.
A few days later, a series of federal,
state and city regulations were issued,
some of which were going to have
a profound effect on our everyday
lives. Hopefully we are all following
them. I’ve been using the sanitizing
container in both the lobby and
arcade and I keep a safe distance
from others (which can have some
ancillary benefits). Next week I have
appointments with both my dentist
and my accountant. I was hoping to
make both of them but was recently
informed that the IRS was granting
a three month extension to file tax
returns. I decided it would be wise
to wait.
On March 15, I gathered up
enough courage to venture out to
ShopRite and saw just what I suspect-ed—
empty shelves and long lines at
the checkout. There were a few cans
of Progresso broccoli cheese soup left
on the shelf. I figured I would play
it smart and return later the next
evening. The shelves were still pretty
bare. Not surprisingly, the two cans
of broccoli cheese soup remained.
Who would buy broccoli cheese
soup? Walking through the arcade
on the March
17 (St. Patrick’s Day), I wondered if
Buffy’s and the VIP room would have
corned beef and cabbage on their
menus. Both restaurants were closed
but city regulations permitted them to
deliver. Passover falls on April 8 and
Easter Sunday on April 12 this year. I
hope that the men making deliveries
on those two days are in pretty good
shape!
Unfortunately, the Men’s Club has
had to cancel all upcoming events.
Technology, as great as it is, has
allowed us to keep in touch with
one another, but it is not the same
as actually being together. I will miss
the breakfasts, Steve’s current events
as well as the luncheons and club
dinners. I feel as though we are in
the “twilight zone” and cannot wait
for it to end.
I’ve tried to make light of some
situations as the country navigates
through this crisis. Hopefully if we
all adhere to the rules and regulations
set forth, we can mitigate the effects
of the coronavirus.
