2:00 p.m., Towers Theater
will host a special spring
performance by celebrated, notfor
profit dance company, Dance
Visions NY, which will honor resident
Pearl Seligson.
Founded in 1990 by Beth Jucovy,
Dance Visions NY is “devoted to
keeping the Isadora Duncan dances
and aesthetic alive and current,”
as well as “presenting unique,
original works which express our
shared humanity in our current
times.” As an Isadora Duncan
dancer herself, dancing with
2nd-generation Duncan exponent
Lillian Loewenthal, it is only fitting
Seligson be so acknowledged.
96-years-young, Seligson remains
active and can often be found
enjoying various movement classes
in the Country Club or walking
in the Arcade (see Fred Chernow
interview/profile on PAGE 4)
2017 marked the 140th anniversary
of the legendary dance pioneer,
whose philosophy eschewed rigid
ballet technique and embraced
what Duncan perceived as natural
movement. As such, performances
were performed barefoot and often
outside as if one with nature.
According to the press release,
the special performance in Towers
Cinema “will viscerally witness
both the authentically preserved
legacy of Isadora Duncan as well
as examples of how this legacy
has left its mark on today’s dance
makers… The contemporary works
in the concert run the gamut from
classical ballet works to contemporary
to jazz, but all are infused with
Duncan dance principles, which
include movement initiated from
the solar plexus, movement which
is emotionally driven and movement
which fully expresses music.”
Solo and group pieces will feature
the music of Chopin, Brahms,
Schubert and Gluck, while Director
Jucovy’s original works include
“Through the Portals,” incorporating
artist Susan Ruth Cohen’s paintings
as the backdrop and “Shades
of Blue,” created to renditions of
the great Blues song, “St. Louis
Woman.” Joining dancers Danielle
Atkinson, Louisa Cathcart, Vanessa
Ferranti, Beth Jucovy, Hope Kroog,
I-Nam Jiemvitayanukoon, Elena
Notkina, Laura Marciano, Rebekah
Mulkey and Hyo Jin Rim, is vocalist
Patti Dunham and actress Shirley
Romaine, who will provide poetry
and insights.
