her teenage years, the story of her
amazing survival, and that of some
members of her family. She and her
husband Sidney are fairly new residents
Mrs. Simon, her parents, five sisters
and one brother endured every
imaginable trauma and tragedy
during the last years of the war. Her
memoir, “Girl in a Striped Dress: A
Survivor of Auschwitz-Birkenau,
Geislingen Steige, and Allach” is
the story of a frightened but determined
teen, her loving and supportive
family, and their endurance
and survival, despite encounters
with Dr. Mengele, extermination
of family members, torturous living
conditions and Nazi atrocities.
Both Simons are survivors, parents,
grandparents, great-grandparents,
and cherish the other members
of their family who survived and
were able to build new lives in the
U.S. and Canada. Mrs. Simon often
talks to school children about her
experiences, so that according to
her daughter Ruth, these children
will “learn to be upstanders rather
than bystanders.” Mrs. Simon has
supported and worked closely with
the Holocaust Resource Center
at the Richard Stockton College
of New Jersey to help preserve
Holocaust memories and data.

perished in the Holocaust and to

North Shore Towers annual
Yom Hashoah Memorial
Program will be held on
Wednesday evening, April 11, at
7:30 p.m. at Towers on the Green.
The program is a joint effort of the
Towers Board of Directors’ Special
Projects Committee, headed by
Robert Ricken, and the Migdal
Chapter of Hadassah. The entire
Towers community is invited to attend
this program of remembrance.
All are welcome. Dessert and coffee
will be served.
Rabbi Michael Klayman of the
Lake Success Jewish Center will
give the invocation and six Towers
residents, who are survivors, will
perform the traditional candle
lighting. The main speaker will be
Rosalie Lebovic Simon, a Holocaust
survivor from Czechoslovakia.
She will describe the torments of
