The Migdal/Hadassah Book Club will
meet on Wednesday, May 23, at 2 p.m.
in the Coleridge Lounge, Arcade Building
#3, to discuss “The Marrying of Chani
Kaufman,” the debut novel by Eve Harris.
The discussion of this intriguing, surprising,
longlisted Man Booker Prize book will be led
by Bern Rosenthal and Arlene Augenbraun.
Harris’ novel examines the complex issues
of family values, marriage and individuality
found within the confines of an Ultra-
Orthodox Jewish community in a suburb of
London. Focusing on the soon to be wed
young couple, Chani and Baruch, and the
Rabbi’s wife, Rivka Zilberman, the author artfully
reveals the many secrets and frustrations
hidden within this closed religious group.
