MEN’S CLUB

March 8 was Karaoke
Night at our monthly
meeting. The full house
was treated to quite a show put
on by Russel Craig and his mom,
Carol Lawrence. There was no
shortage of volunteers from the
audience to sing along and some
folks were moved to do a little
dancing as well. So what if some
of the singing was off-key? It was
more than offset by some moving
renditions of “My Way” and
“The House I Live In” by Murray
Levine, and “Mr. Cellophane”
by Gary Zemser. We came to be
entertained and certainly were.
There were smiles and laughter
all around. Great camaraderie.
Incidentally, the word “Karaoke”
translates to “empty orchestra.”
There was nothing empty about
this night.
Our April meeting has been
canceled due to a conflict with
Holocaust Remembrance Day.
Our next meeting will be
May 10th. It will feature Terrie
Rabinowitz, a counselor and psychotherapist
with an MA in Social
Work from Adelphi University; a
highly successful therapist and private
practitioner, who’s dealt with
individuals, family and groups for
more than 25 years. She’s been on
radio, TV and has lectured as a
motivational speaker. Her topic for
the April meeting: “Questions and
Answers in Dealing with Emotions,
Moods and Relationship Issues.”
Questions will be submitted anonymously
on an index card and
privacy will be respected. Coffee
and cake will be available, and
when accompanied by a member,
guests are welcome for a charge
of five dollars. If you have any
questions, please call Jerry Siegel
at 347-235-4513.
As usual, the March meeting of
the Current Events Group stimulated
some fascinating discussions.
It was attended by 18 members and
was chaired by Ralph Edwards,
who went around the room asking
us to tell him something he didn’t
know. The major topic discussed
was tariffs. How will retaliation
affect us? Who will get favored
treatment? This morphed into a
discussion about the coal industry
and the production of ethanol.
Another wide-ranging discussion
centered around gun control and
the power of the NRA. It was generally
felt you don’t need a cannon to
go deer hunting. Other discussions
centered about the rise of anti-Semitism,
the payment of union dues
by those who don’t want to join
the union and Supreme Court
appointments. The meetings are
always held on the second Monday
of the month at 10:30 a.m. in the
Coleridge lounge.
On another note, the next meeting
of the Book Group, also chaired
by Ralph Edwards, will be on April
23 at which time a new book will
be chosen. His number is 347-235-
0472, if you have any questions.
Great news! The Men’s Club
website (www.northshoretowersmensclub.
org) has been reactivated.
The club’s events for each month
will be posted on the opening page
of the site, beginning with March
2018. Visitors will be able to check
what events they’re interested in
at any time. Frequently visited
websites can be locked into one’s
“favorites websites” list, so they
can be accessed directly whenever
information about an event
is needed. The site is www.northshoretowersmensclub.
org. This will
eliminate having to send emails.
Our recent visits to Café Gardini
and the Heart of Portugal restaurants
were most delightful. Many a
“doggy bag” left the restaurants. To
continue our gastronomical adventures,
on April 19, we’ve scheduled
a dinner at La Grotta, and on April
26, we’re having a Members-Only
lunch at Your Mother’s House.
For more information, check the
website for April.
We are planning some interesting
events for the near future. One
might be a movie night, wherein
we would show a movie, then
have commentary about it, much
like a book club format. We might
also bring back “Old Men Telling
Jokes,” which was very entertaining
the last time we ran it. If you would
like to be a joke teller, contact
Arnie Rabinowitz at 516-317-6705.
In June we’re going to have our
own version of the “Newlywed
Game,” dubbed the “Newlywed
Game Plus 40 to 60.” The last time
we ran it, it was hysterical. So if
you think you know your spouse
or significant other and would like
to be a contestant, please contact
Steve Auerbach at 917-434-4822.
With sadness, the Men’s Club
records the passing of Joe Zeller,
one of our original members. Our
condolences to his family.
Our breakfasts at Buffy’s are still
attracting a friendly group. Every
Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday at
9 a.m., we get together to solve all
the world’s problems of the day.
Feel lucky? Remember BINGO
on the last Sunday of the month at
7:30 p.m. in the large cardroom at
the lower level. All are welcome.
If you would like more information
about our club, please call
our president, Arnie Rabinowitz,
at 516-317-6705. If you would like
more information about current
events call our Events Chairman,
Jerry Siegel, at 347-235-4513, and
if you want to join our club, please
call our Membership Chairman, Joe
DiGiovanni, at 516-965-9225.
With a song in his heart, Russell Craig leads Karaoke night
