MEN’S CLUB BY PAUL NETTLER Our meeting on March 12th featured 2 speakers from our good neighbor next door, LIJ. They were Deputy Executive Director Michael Goldberg and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Richard Schwarz. We received fascinating insight into the operation and problems facing this huge medical complex and learned some interesting facts. Did you know there are 19 hospitals in the North Shore LIJ organization, and they are in the process of opening 50 urgent care centers? LIJ alone has approximately 6500 employees. Both North Shore and LIJ have partnered with Hofstra in creating a Medical School, which will graduate its first class this year. Dr. Schwarz explained how the school will be using a different approach to training than what is considered the standard one. The school will engage in research as well. And something LIJ should be most proud of: The hospital received an award for being the safest hospital in New York State for cardiac care. Both Mr. Goldberg and Dr. Schwarz spent considerable time describing the problems hospitals in general, and North Shore LIJ in particular, face. Two of the biggest being overcrowding and shortening the time patients have to stay in the hospitals. Both hospitals are working together to solve these problems and have been making some progress. After the presentations, there was an interesting Q&A session, during which both questions were asked and a few hospital “war stories” were told. Safe to say, we all came away with both greater respect and admiration for what goes on at our good neighbor next door. 2015 April n Courier game with dinner beforehand; excursion to Atlantic City; and return of Bingo Night. We had a private room, and judging by the noise level, a good time was had by all. A big thank you to Joe DiGiovanni and Jerry Gilbert for making the arrangements. Unfortunately, due to a scheduling conflict, Jack Belello, our planned speaker for April 9th, had to cancel. We hope to reschedule him in the near future. Instead, we are planning a comedy night entitled, for obvious reasons, “Old Guys Telling Jokes,” and we are the “Old Guys.” So come down all you Jack Bennys and Bob Hopes. Dig out those old chestnuts and show us what you’ve got. We’ve already lined up three of the funniest joke tellers this side of the Nassau-Queens border: Jerry Gilbert, Irwin Shanes and Marvin Weisman. If you would like to participate, give Arnie Rabinowitz a call at 516-317-6705. And if you show up at one of our informal Tuesday and Wednesday 9:15 breakfasts in the VIP Room, you might get a small preview. Our snowbird compatriots in Florida continue to have a good time, what with their dinners, dinnerdances and boat trips. But soon, many will be returning north to celebrate the holidays and regale us with their adventures. Do they realize that we sometimes have snow in April? And as a reminder, we have some interesting events planned for the next few months, not limited to, but including a guided tour of the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Glen Cove on April 29th; barbecue; fishing trip; Brooklyn Cyclones baseball Members await start of the LIJ presentation (l. to r.)
