10 North Shore Towers Courier n April 2015 COMING ATTRACTIONS REFORM SCHOOL New Pilates class helps develop core strength, balance and longevity BY STEPHEN VRATTOS The Pilates form of exercise was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. It emphasizes the balanced development of the body through core strength, flexibility, and awareness in order to support efficient, graceful movement. “Core strength” is the balanced development of the deep and superficial muscles that stabilize, align, and move the trunk of the body, especially the abdominals and muscles of the back. One of the best things about the Pilates method is that it works so well for a wide range of people. Athletes and dancers love it—legendary dance impresario Martha Graham was an early devotee of the method—as do seniors, women rebounding from pregnancy, and people who at various stages of physical rehabilitation. Despite the somewhat medieval name and appearance, the Pilates Reformer is actually a sophisticated machine, which uses tension cords to set resistance according to an individual’s strength.. The classes are small, allowing instructor Don Ervin to devote plenty of time to each person; set the proper level of resistance and check their alignment and form as he puts them through their paces. Reformer classes run throughout the week. Check the fitness schedule on the “Country Club Happenings” pages of the NST Courier for exact times. Sign-up is necessary to attend each class. Classes are available on a first come, first serve basis.
