COMING ATTRACTIONS INCOMING...! Golf and Tennis Welcome New Faces Oropallo would like to add more events, such as pizza parties, in the evenings as a way of luring new members. “Some people work all day; they get onto the course after 5pm,” she explains. “I figure we can organize something for them to take part in after playing 9-holes.” Other initiatives include card parties, at which members who don’t play golf play cards instead, while their colleagues hit the course; then all join for a luncheon; and events with the Men’s Golf Association. Oropallo also plans to continue the Association’s Babes Against Cancer charity benefit for the American Cancer Society, named after women’s golf champion Babe Zaharis, who won the U.S. Open after colon cancer surgery and while playing with a colostomy bag. The new president hopes new people will come to these events, not just golfers. “I’d like to see more people mixing and mingling and getting to know one another.” She understands golf can be intimidating and is not an easy sport to learn, but finds it rewarding. Oropallo never played much before moving to North Shore Towers four years ago; then she had an epiphany. “I live on a golf course; I’ve got to learn to play! And people here are so wonderful. Bob Guido, the golf pro, helps even when he’s not required to do so!” LEO TUJAK — New Tennis Association President Tujak hopes to swell the ranks of the association with members who actually play the game and not just participate in club festivities. He estimates about 80 members currently make up the club, many of which don’t play. The Tennis Association plays about three tournaments a year, with accompanying dinners thereafter, including one to benefit the American Cancer Society and another to close out the season. Tujak plans on continuing the annual tradition of visiting the U.S. Open venue to tour the grounds in the weeks leading up to the Grand Slam event. The Association also conducts a young players’ clinic with the help of one of its members involved in the U.S.T.A. “We bring in kids to play,” Tujak explains. “We get pros to come in to conduct talks and teach them; then we’ll have a mixed game with the members, the pros and the kids.” “I encourage anyone who lives here to come down and try it,” Tujak says. “We’re not pros—far from it! We have players from all levels.” JOHN MORRISON — New Assistant Golf Pro President THERESA OROPALLO — New Ladies Golf Association President TUJAK 14 North Shore Towers Courier n April 2015 Morrison comes to the Country Club from Turtle Cove Golf Center in The Bronx’s Pelham Bay Park, where he held the same position. It was his admiration for the NST Country Club’s current golf pro, Bob Guido, which led to his wanting to join. “The head pro has an excellent reputation,” he says. Morrison, who cites his wealth of experience in teaching the Game of Kings, looks forward to helping members improve their games, assisting Guido and just making the experience better for everyone.
