Hear the panel share relevant information and wisdom for “young retirees.” Mayor Ed Koch was mayor of New York City from 1978 to 1989. He is a partner in the law firm of Bryan Cave LLP and hosts a call-in radio program on Bloomberg AM 1130 (WBBR). He is author of 17 books. George McGovern is a historian, author, and former US Representative, US Senator and the Democratic Party nominee in the 1972 presidential election. Rupert Murdoch is the founder, chairman and CEO of global media holding company News Corporation, the world’s second-largest media conglomerate. Paul Volcker is the former Federal Reserve chairman and the former chairman of the President’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board. Leonard Lopate is the host of “The Leonard Lopate Show” on WNYC. Dr. Deborah Marin is a geriatric psychiatrist and associate professor of psychiatry and geriatrics and palliative medicine at Mount Sinai. Dan Kaplan is former chairman and president of 92Y. Monday, April 22nd, 2013 Edward Smaldone, Director of Queens College’s Aaron Copland School of Music 8 pm – VIP Room Dr. Edward Smaldone (b. 1956) is professor of Music and (since 2002) the director of the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, City University of New York. His composition teachers include George Perle, Ralph Shapey, Henry Weinberg and Hugo Weisgall. Smaldone is the recipient of awards such as the Goddard Lieberson Fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, as well as grants and awards from ASCAP, The MacDowell Colony, Yaddo Corporation, the Charles Ives Center for the Arts, the Percussive Arts Society and the American Music Center. Smaldone’s music has been performed by the Munich Radio Orchestra, the Denver Chamber Orchestra, The Memphis Symphony, the Queens Symphony Orchestra, Oberlin New Music Ensemble, the League/ ISCM Chamber Players, the Peabody Camerata, the Stony Brook “Premieres!” Ensemble, Oratorio Sinfonica Japan and many other soloists and ensembles in the United States, Canada, China, Japan and Europe. An active composer for the dance, Smaldone arranged music by and attributed to Pergolesi, which has been performed worldwide by Mikhail Baryshnikov’s White Oak Dance Project . Other collaborations have been with the Hartford Ballet and the dancerchoreographer Yin Mei. His music is recorded on the CRI, New World, Capstone and Naxos labels. He is a revising author of A New Approach to Sightsinging, fifth edition, W.W. Norton, 2011. His latest CD “Rituals: Sacred and Profane” was released on the Naxos label in April 2012. Friday, April 26, 2013 Vocalist, Susan King 8 PM – VIP Room Susan is an accomplished, and versatile singer with over 15 years of professional experience. She is equally at home with the standards of bygone eras to the theatrical comedy of Broadway. Susan and her spectacular recent cabaret performances of “Babes on Broadway!” received rave reviews. Susan is a sophisticated, comedic and talented performer. She is sure to charm and entertain everyone. MARK YOUR DATE BOOKS APRIL CLUB HAPPENINGS TENNIS NEWS...
