4 North Shore Towers Courier n January 2014 NST Men’s Club cheers BROOKLYN NETS Members of the North Shore Towers Men’s Club made a pilgrimage with spouses and friends recently to enjoy a game with our newest hometown team, the Brooklyn Nets. The excited group hopped the Long Island Rail Road to the Barclays Center in the heart of Brooklyn on Tuesday, December 10 – which offered an opportunity for everyone to mingle and get to know each other. “We picked a game that was exciting given the Nets were engaged in mortal combat with the Boston Celtics,” said Gary Zwetchkenbaum, event committee member, of the excursion. “Upon emerging into the cold night air we were greeted by such a visual cacophony of light that one might describe the area as ‘Times Square East.’” Alex Samuels, club secretary, and Paul Nettler, vice president, credited “some of the more mature members of the group” with remembering exactly where the old Paramount Theatre and Junior’s were, adding a touch of nostalgia to a new adventure. The game was a pleasure to watch for the hometown crowd, with the Nets shooting better than they have so far this season. The Celtics managed to tie the score at 60 during the third quarter but the Nets answered with 10 straight points and came out the winner. “I would like to think that we bore witness to a rebirth and this will turn out to be a winning season after all,” Al Fuchs, club president, said. “The Nets won – and they won, as they enjoyed the camaraderie and the night out. Here’s to more such events in the future.” MEN’S CLUB TALKS COMMUNICATION, EVENTS The Men’s Club is still conducting business as usual and had their monthly meeting on December 12 with 19 members present. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Toby Horowitz, presiding while President Al Fuchs is in Florida. While Fuchs is away, he plans to conduct activities for those members also in Florida to keep them connected to the club. Horowitz said the club needs more input from members regarding what activities the group should take on. He indicated the responses have been poor and everybody’s support is needed for the club to be successful. A telephone communication network was suggested, as well as giving club information to building concierges. Horowitz said he will evaluate those options. Also at the meeting, the charter was approved unanimously. Future meetings will include speakers on suggested topics, including Board President Bob Ricken on what it’s like to be on the board, Kevin Grant on the New York Knicks travel wheelchair team, Dr. Goldsmith on nuclear medicine and Fred Chernoff on how to improve memory. Ideas for additional speakers were discussed, including a newspaper sports writer, fitness trainer and senior editor of the New York Daily News. Jerry Gilbert will send out notices for the next event, Kenny Vance and Michael Bolton. Future meeting dates will be posted in the mail rooms of all three buildings. They will start at 7 p.m. and speakers will begin at 7:30 p.m. New members are still welcome, and those interested should get in touch with Fuchs.
