THE QUEENS MUSEUM OF ART New York City Building Flushing Meadows Corona Park www.queensmuseum.org On Saturday January 11, The Queens Museum of Art will host “Poets in the Galleries: Patricia Spears Jones Explores Queens International 2013.” The Poets in the Galleries series promotes the museum’s exhibition space as a site for exploration, featuring interactive readings and discussions. Patricia Spears Jones will be the poet for this event and will conduct a lively presentation as part of the museum’s current biennial of Queens-based artists, Queens International 2013. Meet in the museum café at 2 p.m. to stroll through the galleries, as Jones selects key pieces to highlight and invites you to participate along the way. Admission is free. This year’s series was curated by Queen’s poet Laureate Paolo Javier, based on a concept initially developed by Pratt Institute Dean of Art and Design, Amir Parsa. Through January 18, South Asian Women’s Creative Collective Annual Visual Arts Show will exhibit “A Bomb, With Ribbon Around It.” The exhibition’s title is based on the surrealist Andre Breton’s famous remark upon encountering Frida Kahlo’s art: “a ribbon around a bomb.” Breton’s description is used as a curatorial foil, presenting works by South Asian Women that metaphorically depict the self in personal, social, or cultural aspects, as “attractive, unassuming, and pristine as a beautiful ribbon” Exhibited artworks include painting, work-on-paper, sculpture, installation, photography, video, and performance. A publication will accompany the exhibition, with reproductions of artists’ works, their bios and statements, and an essay by the curator. The January 18 exhibition will go from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. including a walkthrough with the curator, talks with the artists and a closing reception.
