NEW YEAR’S DAY HOURS New Year’s Day, January 1st, 2014 – Club Hours 8:00 am – 4:00 pm TOWERS CC VIDEO CONCERT SERIES This month’s selections: THURSDAY, JANUARY 9, 2014 Elton John: Elton 60 – Live at Madison Square Garden 8:00 pm – VIP Room Elton John celebrated his 60th birthday and made his recordsetting 60th appearance at Madison Square Garden on March 25, 2007, with a special concert. Among the songs were rarely performed album tracks such as “Where to Now St. Peter?” “Holiday Inn,” and “Roy Rogers,” along with the expected hits. John appeared with his usual band, augmented on many numbers by the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. The shots here frequently provide glimpses of the many celebrities who attended, as Bill Clinton, Brian Wilson, Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne, Rosie O’Donnell, Michael Caine, and Kiefer Sutherland flit by before the viewer begins to lose track of the all familiar faces, mixed in with unfamiliar ones dancing and singing along, some dressed up in approximations of early Elton John stage outfits. This will be especially welcome to fans who can trace the development of John’s music, costumes, and hairstyles! With this unprecedented access, Emmy-winning, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Robert Weide followed the notoriously private film legend over a year and a half to create the ultimate film biography. Woody Allen: A Documentary chronicles Allen’s career - from teen writer to Sid Caeser’s TV scribe, from standup comedian to award-winning writer-director averaging one film-per-year for more than 40 years. Exploring Allen’s writing habits, casting, directing, and relationship with his actor’s first-hand, new interviews with A-listers, writing partners, family and friends provide insight and backstory to the usually inscrutable filmmaker. THURSDAY, JANUARY 23, 2014 Ricky Jay, Deceptive Practice 8:00 pm – VIP Room Ricky Jay is a world-renowned magician, author, historian and actor (often a mischievous presence in the films of David Mamet and Paul Thomas Anderson) - and a performer who regularly provokes astonishment from even the most jaded audiences. Deceptive Practice traces Jay’s achievements and influences, from his apprenticeship at age 4 with his grandfather, to such now-forgotten legends as Al Flosso, Slydini, Cardini and his primary mentors, Dai Vernon and Charlie Miller. Featuring rare footage from his 1970s TV appearances (doing 3-card Monte with Steve Martin on The Dinah Shore Show) and told in Jay’s inimitable voice, this is a remarkable journey inside the secretive world of magic and the small circle of eccentrics who are its perpetual devotees. MONDAY, JANUARY 27, 2014 Annie Hall with Woody Allen and Diane Keaton 8:00 pm – VIP Room Woody Allen’s romantic comedy of the Me Decade follows the up and down relationship of two mismatched New York neurotics. Jewish comedy writer Alvy Singer ponders the modern quest for love and his past romance with tightly-wound WASP singer Annie Hall. The twice-divorced Alvy knows that it’s not easy to find a mate when the options include pretentious New York intellectuals and lifestyle-obsessed Rolling Stone writers, but la-di-dah-ing Annie seems different. Along the rocky road of their coupling, Allen/Alvy weigh in on such topics as endless therapy, movies vs. TV, the absurdity of dating rituals, anti-Semitism, drugs, and, in one of the best set pieces, repressed Midwestern WASP insanity vs. crazy Brooklyn Jewish boisterousness.
