FROM THE EDITOR
Happy Holidays, LIC Courier readers!
It’s almost time to ring in the New Year and we’ve
got a fun issue for you. To celebrate the holiday
season, we spoke to three Long Island City resi-dents
to ask how they celebrate the holidays. From
a dinner consisting of seven fishes to a Chanukah
celebration for the whole neighborhood. From a
dinner consisting of seven fishes to a Chanukah
celebration for the whole neighborhood, LIC resi-dents
honor traditions in a variety of ways.
This issue is also jam-packed with new restau-rants
that are now calling western Queens home.
Sapps Restaurant, from the owners of SHI in Long
Island City, began to serve up Japanese dishes at
their new spot in November.
Legendary Queens rapper Nas will come back
home in February to open a Long Island City loca-tion
of his chicken and waffles joint, Sweet Chick.
In addition to profiling some newer eateries, we
spoke to Steve Kanellos, who has been running
Court Square Diner in Long Island City since 1991.
Kanellos and his brother, Nick, have watched the
neighborhood transform, and have reworked their
menu to cater to the area's news residents.
Big Reuse, a nonprofit that had been operat-ing
out of Astoria for 12 years, officially closed
last month due to rising rents. The organization
helped divert millions of pounds of construction
materials away from landfills while providing Astoria
residents with cheap, recyclable furniture. Staff
also helped with the city’s composting project and
taught residents what it meant to be sustainable.
As always, we have the latest in real estate news
including a plan by the Plaxall family to rezone a
portion of Long Island City’s Anable Basin.
If you’re looking to attend an art exhibit or
comedy show, we’ve got you covered with our arts
and events calendars. Feel free to reach out with
any story ideas at amatua@qns.com.
