The Growing Family
Name: Megan C.
Background: I’m originally from Ohio. I’m of
Northern European descent, and my husband is of
Mexican descent.
How long have you lived here: 11 years
Occupation: Teacher
How she celebrates: I don’t actively follow any re-ligion,
but I do celebrate Christmas. We just started
fully decorating – tree and all – when my baby was
born last year. Before that I mostly accessorized the
house.
My husband grew up in a family that did not recog-nize
any holidays so I’ve had to ease him into the
over-the-top holiday season you see in America.
We travel to Ohio where my mom attempts to have
a Norman Rockwell, picture-perfect holiday.
Favorite memory: My family always has a fondue din-ner
on Christmas Eve. It had all kinds of meats, veggies,
and cheese in boiling hot pots that never stayed hot
long enough – this was
before electric
fondues.

Traditions she hopes to continue: Fondue Christmas Eve dinner! But I am much
more subdued. I don’t make a million Christmas cookies. I also don’t buy as many pres-ents
that my parents bought me as a kid. I will leave all the holiday magic to Grandma!
What she loves about LIC: It has a small neighborhood feel. I have a great
network of people that have become my family here.
