The internet has fundamentally changed the
way we encounter, create, and share the
moving image. While online video is indebted to
past modes of cinema and television, most of
the nearly one million hours of video created
online every day do not t into their systems of
classication. Unlike traditional genres like
westerns, musicals, and sitcoms, forms like the
vlog, Let’s Play, and unboxing video are native
to the web.
74 million million million tons is an exhibition about
the types of evidence
that artworks can produce. Employing dierent
methodologies to investigate, intervene, and
assemble, the artists in the exhibition reveal subjects
on the threshold of politics and the outskirts of
legality: the robot, the refugee, the environment, the
startup, and others. While their subject matter is
divergent, the exhibition's artists push against
narratives put forth by corporate and government
industries by producing specic knowledge and
corroborative objects around unmapped historical
and political events.
Since the 1970s, Sue Coe (British and American, b. 1951)
has worked at the juncture of art and activism to expose
injustices and abuses of power. Protesting various forms
of exploitation and violence, she tackles issues of sexism,
racism, economic inequality, xenophobia, and animal
cruelty. Graphic Resistance highlights these concerns in
a selection of drawings, prints, and large-scale collages,
as well as illustrations that Coe produced for newspaper
opinion pages.
