Scanlan’s XC Track
Team truly blessed
BY WINSTON DINKINS
Monsignor Scanlan’s
Track Team is truly blessed.
Our goal in the beginning of
the XC (cross country) season,
was to win the New York
CHSAA Sectional Championship
and the NYC Cross
Country Carnival, formerly
known as the Fordham Prep
Freshman Cross Country Relays
and the Eastern States
Cross Country Meet. We were
able to accomplish both goals.
Plus, we were blessed with
a team win at the Freshman
Girls NYCHSAA / BQCHSAA
(City) Championship.
On Saturday, Nov. 6, we
competed in the 78th CHSAA
Freshman and 41st Sophomore
Intersectional (State)
Championship at legendary
Van Cortlandt Park. The
best New York CHSAA XC
(cross country) athletes were
in attendance. The following
events were contested:
Freshman races – 1.6 miles
and Sophomore races – 2.5
miles. Medals were awarded
to the top 25-plus athletes
and plaques to the top three
teams. The meet was well organized,

and the competition
was fi erce. After the freshman
girls winning sectionals, we
were looking to ride our momentum
into our biggest test
of the season!
Our freshman girls didn’t
let us down. We were blessed
with a second-place fi nish

All four girls won individual

who broke her PR (personal
record) by 1 minute and 31 seconds
and sealed the second
place team win followed by Diamond
Fields, who ran good in
her second 1.6-mile race.
The boys looked good too.
Sophomores Kyle Matthews
and Zion Barnabas ran respectful
times in their 2.5-

Our next competition will
be our fi rst indoor meet, on
Friday, Dec. 3, the North Shore

All athletes, coaches
and spectators must be vaccinated

St. Raymond High School for Boys
held their 25th Annual Alumni Association
Golf Outing at Westchester
Hills Golf Club in White Plains on
Sept. 29. This year’s outing was held in
honor and memory of beloved St. Ray’s
teacher and baseball coach Mr. Marc
“Coach” DeLuca. With over 144 golfers
and 221 dinner guests, the event
offered a chance to gather together for
a day of golf, dinner, drinks, auctions,
raffl es, fun and remembrance.
Marc DeLuca was the true defi nition
of a Raven. He taught and coached
with love, dedication, heart, leadership,
compassion and encouragement.
Both on and off the fi eld, Marc worked
to bring “his” Ravens to new and exciting
heights. With Marc’s family
and friends in attendance, the St. Raymond
community post-humorously
bestowed the honor of adding Marc’s
plaque and permanent memory to the
St. Raymond Wall of Fame. His parents,
wife and children also received
plaques of recognition and remembrance.
Golfers enjoyed a beautiful day
and were able to participate in on-thecourse
raffl es and a chance to swing
for a hole-in-one. Once back in the clubhouse,
guests enjoyed a cocktail hour,
buffet dinner, open bar, raffl e prizes
and a live auction. The dinner program
kicked off with a blessing from
St. Raymond Pastor, Rev. James Cruz
’83 and addresses by Principal Judith
Carew and Alumni Association member
John Barker ’76. Live auction winners
went home with items like NY
Giants tickets, NY Yankees tickets,
NY Rangers tickets, a 4-night, 5-day
stay in Myrtle Beach, a wine pairing
dinner at Elm in Connecticut, and of
course rounds of golf at surrounding
tristate area golf clubs. Raffl e prizes
included a set of Taylor-made golf
clubs, golf bags, St. Raymond apparel,
and many individual golf clubs.
The SRHS Golf Outing is just one
of the major fundraising events during
the school year, created specifi -
cally to raise proceeds for the Alumni
Association Scholarship Fund. “It is
the catalyst for change in the lives of
St. Raymond young men, current and
future. Every ticket sale, donation received
and sponsorship purchased
goes directly to the students”, Alumni
Association member John Barker ’76
stated. “This is just a small part of
building a legacy that we hope will
last a lifetime.”
The St. Raymond Advancement Offi
ce, in conjunction with alumni association
members John Barker ’76, John
Corcoran ’78 and Bob Brilla ’70, worked
diligently over the summer months and
September to bring in the sponsorships,
golfers and auction items needed for
the event. This year St. Raymond is excited
to announce that the outing raised
more than $61,000 in scholarship funding
proceeds, the largest event proceeds
to date.
