Join in for a Saturday afternoon of
art experimentation at the Bronx Museum
of the Arts. Inspired by our exhibit
Henry Chalfant: Art vs. Transit,
1977-1987, celebrate the history and
spirit of graffi ti through family art
activities, Family Affair: Make Your
Mark, will take place on Saturday, October
19, from 1 to 4 p.m. at 1040 Grand
Concourse.
Featuring ‘Benching with Kids,’
piece book sessions with writers and
dancing with Rokafella, Kwikstep, and
Full Circle Souljahs.
Recommended for children ages 4 to
12 with parent/caregiver.

Studio Café takes place Saturday,
November 16, at Pelham Art Center, 155
Fifth Avenue, Pelham, New York. This
annual event directly supports the Pelham
Art Center’s art, education, and
community programs. VIP and General
Admission tickets are now on sale
for this fundraiser bringing together
over 200 community leaders and art
lovers. Live music, one-of-a-kind art
and auction items, live art demos, and
signature food from local restaurants
make Studio Café the Art Party of the

The evening begins with renowned jazz
guitarist Dan Haedicke (DH4 Music)
and vocals by Sarah Rayani. This contemporary
jazz duo performs classical
jazz with a soulful twist, paying homage
to old school hip hop. IN/FLUX artist
Nicky Enright aka DJ Lightbolt will
continue the party with sounds that
stimulate the dance fl oor and the global
cortex.
Over 50 artists are involved with
Studio Café. A special selection of
works all made on 1’x 1’ wood panels go
on sale for $250 at the fundraiser. VIP
guests can arrive early to get their fi rst
choice! Artists include: Brian Bober,
Lisa D’Amico, Katharine Dufault, Kate
Fauvell, Frank Guida, Satish Joshi,

Go Batty with Our Victorian Playhouse:
Native bats are among the most
helpful nocturnal creatures, giving
gardeners a hand by eating thousands
of insects a night. Learn more about the
species that call the Garden home, examine
a bat skeleton, and look for lifelike
bats in the rafters of our Victorian
Playhouse.
Learn All about Spooky Spider Legs:
Explore the important role spiders play
in garden ecology, then learn more
about them with hands-on activities
and games.
Examine Pumpkins and Gourds:
Ever wonder how these seasonal staples
are grown? Take a closer look at
their peculiar shapes, patterns, and colors
and discuss your fi ndings with an
NYBG Explainer.
Pumpkin Carving Face Off: Saturday,
October 19, 1 to 4 p.m. Visitor’s
Center: Watch as carving experts compete
to be NYBG’s carver of the season.
Master carver, Adam Bierton, hosts a
pumpkin carving contest between some
of the top NYC-area pumpkin carving
artists. Stay tuned for their contestant
line-up. Adam Bierton is a professional
sculptor and pumpkin carver based in
New York. In 2015, Bierton was asked
to participate in the Food Network series
Halloween Wars—and he won.
The Food network contacted Bierton
again in 2017 to return to defend his title
on a new mini-series called Halloween
Wars: Hayride of Horror, where he
carved some of the largest pumpkins
from all over the country.
Pumpkin Carving Demonstrations:
Sunday, October 20, 1 to 3 p.m.; and Saturday
and Sunday, October 26 and 27, 1
to 3 p.m. Watch as a master carver transforms
pumpkins of all shapes and sizes
into spooky works of art. Then, pick up
an expertly-designed stencil and make
your own spooky creation at home.
Giant Pumpkin Weekend: Saturday
and Sunday, October 26 and 27, 10 a.m.
to 6 p.m. Some may think mummies,
werewolves, and other monsters are the
highlight of the Halloween season, but
nothing tops the monstrous, gargantuan
gourds that headline Giant Pumpkin
Weekend. Get up close and personal
with some of the world’s largest pumpkins,
meticulously cared for every year
by elite growers and brought to NYBG
in collaboration with the Great Pumpkin
Commonwealth.
Meet the Growers: Q&A and Seed
Harvesting; October 26, 1 and 3 p.m.;
and October 27, at noon in the Everett
Children’s Adventure Garden. Watch
as they harvest the pumpkins’ immense
seeds, ask the growers your
most pressing questions about growing
these giants, and snap a selfi e next to
these massive pumpkins to see how you
measure up!

NYBG gets a Halloween makeover
with a sea of gourds of all shapes and
sizes, a host of silly scarecrows, and
frightfully fun activities. Experience
the thrills and chills of the season with
visits from creepy creatures of the
night, after-dark adventures, and the
arrival of monstrous pumpkins. Set out
among the twisting, turning trails of
the Everett Children’s Adventure Garden.
Spruce up your Halloween décor
by potting up your own ghostly dusty
miller plant to take home, investigate
a mysterious Victorian playhouse, and
put on your own bone-rattling puppet
show.

Owls and Bats! with Center for Environmental

Everett Children’s Adventure Garden
All-Day Exploration, ongoing, 10

can explore the wonders of science and
nature in our outdoor 12-acre garden.
Climb the boulders and view the landscape
below from your high perch,
dash through Beth’s Maze, and check
out the cattails and lily pads at Habitat
Hub.
Edible Academy Fresh from the
Garden Tastings, through November
3, Saturdays and Sundays, 2 to 2:30 p.m.
and 4 to 4:30 p.m.: Cooking demonstrations,
presented by Whole Foods Market
®, encourage families to get handson
with healthy cooking. New recipes
featuring plants grown in the Edible
Academy are offered each week. Edible
Academy staff will demonstrate familyfriendly
recipes using seasonal vegetables,
fruits, and herbs.
Edible Academy All-Day Exploration,
ongoing, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.: Visit the
Barnsley Beds at the Edible Academy to
explore and learn about vegetable and
organic gardening best practices. Chat
with Edible Academy staff, and learn in
what’s in season today.
