Last month, a VIP Community Services Candlelight Vigil was held to recognize those
who are in recovery and remember those who have been lost to addiction. The walk
began at 1870 Crotona Avenue and continued to Crotona Park.

International Day of the Girl
St. Barnabas High School celebrated ‘International Day of the Girl.’ Photo by St. Barnabas H.S.
In recognition of ‘International
Day of the Girl’ and Italian and Hispanic
Heritage Month, Saint Barnabas
High School celebrated with
a school assembly recognizing the
contributions of these two cultures
at this all-girls, college preparatory
school. Students from the Italian and
Spanish clubs provided dances traditional
dances - Pizzica from Italy;
Salsa, originally from Cuba; and an
ancient Mexican dance.
Principal Theresa Napoli said,
“As we celebrate the International
Day of the Girl we are called to remember
the extraordinary forces
women are in the world. Every girl
needs to realize that her voice makes
a difference and her voice can create
positive change.“
Research has shown that attending
a single-sex school has many benefi
ts for young women ranging from
increased confi dence to the willingness
to try new activities and academic
challenges they might otherwise
not attempt in a co-educational
setting-all leading to higher levels of
achievement. When in a single-sex
program, young women often gravitate
towards areas that are non-traditional
for their gender, such as mathematics
and the sciences, which they
may shy away from in a co-educational
school.
With a challenging curriculum,
an array of extra-curricular activities
and an emphasis on service,
Saint Barnabas High School’s goal is
to embrace global diversity and educate
its young women to develop the
confi dence and leadership qualities
to excel in college and beyond.
Napoli said, “As we celebrate the
International Day of the Girl we are
called to remember the extraordinary
forces women are in the world.
Every girl needs to realize that her
voice makes a difference and her
voice can create positive change.“
