COUNCILMAN MARK GJONAJ
This summer, I have pledged to be a
part of the NYC Council Participatory
Budgeting Cycle. Constituents from the
13th Council District will have the incredible
opportunity to infl uence the
types of capital improvements they
would like to make in their community.
They will be given the platform
to directly express project ideas and be
involved in the New York City Capital
Budget process.
Each fi scal year, every Council Member
is given a $5 million capital budget,
in which each councilmember has the
option of pledging at least 1 million dollars
towards Participatory Budgeting
to fund capital improvement projects.
Started in the New York City Council
in 2011, this process has allowed voters
to fund different projects such as, enhanced
security, technology in schools,
and bus countdown clocks.
Participatory Budgeting does more
than just allocate funds. It introduced
the concept of civic engagement and responsibility
by giving voting power to
all constituents staring from age 11. It
empowers and diversifi es communities
by providing ballots in several different
languages. It increases accessibility
and awareness by bringing voting
booths to schools, libraries, and green
markets. Since, Participatory Budgeting
is heavily based on volunteerism, it
also increases community engagement
and activism.
Hence, I am looking forward to the
commencement of the Participatory
Budgeting Cycle. I urge you to stop by
the District Offi ce for a Participatory
Budget project idea card - no idea is
too big or small. The voices and ideas
of constituents are absolutely vital to
uplifting and enhancing communities.
Together, we can create a more active
and empowered Council District 13.
Our Throggs Neck Merchants Association
Sidewalk Sale was held on
Saturday, June 29 along East Tremont
Avenue between Lafayette and Randall
avenues. Many braved the heat
and enjoyed free snacks and activities
while getting to know the Throggs
Neck Merchants and their employees.
The kids seemed to enjoy it most with
face painting, arts and crafts, cotton
candy, popcorn and Italian ices.
Adults had a chance to shop, enjoy
some tasty treats and ask questions
about Throggs Neck merchants’ products
and services.
