people and watch films that I enjoy.”
At the club’s last meetup on Monday,
Sept. 20 — the club’s first screening at
Heart of Gold — they showed the 1978
version of “Dawn of the Dead.” Some of
their other showings so far have been
“Scream,” “Candyman” and “Jennifer’s
Body.” Sometimes the members all
vote on what to watch, but Herrmann
also likes to surprise his guests with his
own ideas.
“Sometimes there’s votes, but it’s
still early in the club so I have a lot of
things I’m excited to show,” Herrmann
said. “And then if a new movie comes
out, we like to show the original. We
showed ‘Candyman’ before the new
one came out; that way, people can see
it and get excited for the new one and
have a reason to come out to the club.”
With Halloween looming, it’s only
right that the Astoria Horror club
members celebrate in style by having
their own special movie event. The
date wasn’t yet set when BORO went
to print, but a “power hour,” which will
consist of 60 clips put together by a
friend of Herrmann’s, is in the works.
“He makes really high-quality power
hours for movies,” Herrmann said. “He
does a really good job and makes it
fun. I think people are going to like it.”
While the club has been having
a great time so far, it’s been more
than just a place to meet up for
films; they’ve been creating a little
community for people to hang out
and make friends.
“I love the idea that people are
coming out just to hang out and watch
movies that I like,” Herrmann said. “I
wanted to build a community around
that. I didn’t expect it to become a big
deal. I’m really happy about it, and I’m
really happy to be bringing people

together, and people have really
jumped at the opportunity to help out.”
