6 | BOROMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2014 CHARACTERS Talent with a Twist Whenever someone chooses to move to New York City, you can bet that 99 percent of the time that huge decision is fueled by a thousand dreams, aspirations, hopes, and even fears of varying shapes and sizes. The overnight success stories are certainly there, but admittedly few and so very far between. When married couple Nina Burri and Stefan Schwitter decided to make that leap from Switzerland to the Big Apple, however, fortune fantastically favored the brave. Who else can say that within just a month of making that jump they would find themselves performing on one of the greatest American stages—Radio City Music Hall—being broadcast in the quarterfinals on live national television for one of the country’s most popular reality competitions, America’s Got Talent? That is precisely what happened to Nina Burri, a former ballerina who at age 30 moved to China to study the art of contortion. To sit across from her piercing blue eyes is to witness a unique, rare charisma that genuinely inspires and even motivates. To watch her twist her body into knots, however, is simply breathtaking. “You know what seemed to be missing from that act?” questioned Howie Mandel. “Bones!” “You are really very special,” added Howard Stern. “That is the best contortion I have seen, and I’ve been here three years.” Though Nina’s journey in the competition ended in those quarterfinals, the real journey has just begun for her and her husband, who specializes in holistic personal training. So BORO checked in with the beautiful duo following the performance at Radio City to see just what exactly a day in their life might hold as they gradually settle into life in Long Island City. “We were always the exotic couple,” explains Nina of their Swiss life. “But it started getting too comfortable.” “We are so fortunate to have found Long Island City,” smiles her husband, a former professional wrestler.
