cargo volumes dropped 5.0% compared
with the same month in 2018.

were 16% lower. Of all origin regions,
Latin America was hit hardest with
a YoY volume decrease of 10%. The
only origin region that remained stable
was Africa. As destinations all
regions contracted – ranging from
Latin America (-8%) to the Middle
East & South Asia (-1%).
Of the Top-20 origin cities in the
world, only two showed a YoY volume
increase in October, and both are in
China: Guangzhou (+16%) and Shanghai
(+3%). Some ‘smaller’ origins in
Asia Pacific also recorded positive
results: Shenzhen +58%, Zhengzhou
+19%, Ho Chi Minh City +7%; double
digit growth from Perth (+22%). Sata

Horse sense. The Animal Transportation
Association (ATA) has
partnered with CHAMP Cargosystems
and Arioneo in a ground-breaking
study on monitoring horse wellbeing
in air travel. The study aims
to monitor horse health - including
heart rate, respiration, and temperature.

DHL has opened its seventh Foreign
Trade Zone (FTZ) at JFK Airport.

CBP Seizures. U.S. Customs and
Border Protection (CBP) officers
seized counterfeit consumer goods
recently at Washington Dulles International
Airport that, if authentic,
would have a manufacturer suggested
retail price (MSRP) of more than $2
million. CBP officers initially examined
the air cargo shipment of 2,601
coin purses, 459 purses, and three
backpacks adorned with Gucci, Louis
Vuitton, Chanel, Dior, Prada and
Hermes brand names that arrived in
18 boxes September 25 from China.
CBP offices at JFK Airport are busy
interceding similar and other goods
including NFL wear, Apple iphones,
Samsung ear buds, fake brand name
clothing and medications.
Cargolux. Franco Nanna, Director
of global logistics services, at
Cargolux said Cargolux Airlines has
renewed its Cargo iQ audit certification
for the next three years. Cargo
iQ is comprised of airlines and forwarders,
whose mission is to improve
the cargo-handling processes,
from shipper to consignee.
Lufthansa. Lufthansa Cargo has
ordered a further two Boeing 777Fs
as it speeds up the retirement of its
MD-11Fs.
The freighter operator said the order
is part of its fleet modernisation
programme that will see it retire its
remaining 10 MD-11Fs by the end of
2020. Initially, the carrier had been
expecting to have completed the retirement
of its MD-11Fs by around
2024.
