On November 9th, a local
group of 99s ( Ninety-Nines
International Organization
of Women Pilots ) held their
luncheon at the Cradle of Aviation
Museum museum in
celebration of the 99s 90th anniversary
by giving tours to
local Girl Scouts. The event
represented the 90th Anniversary
of the Ninety-Nines that
met in at Curtiss Field, Valley
Stream, NY on November
1929, around the current incarnation

Held during National Aviation
Month, the Cradle of Aviation
Museum celebrated the
achievements of women in aviation
through the years. The
99’s represent some of these
women who broke boundaries,
broke records, and paved
a future for women in air and
space. Their pilots stories of
fi ghting for equality (and for
the right to race men) and the
innovative ways they overcame
discrimination is inspiring
and timely with the
fi rst all-female space walk.

conducts events for
young girls to become aware
of the possibilities of a career
in aviation with 99’s as role
models having partnered with
Vaughn College of Aviation.
The organization began In
August 1929, at the Women’s
Air Derby (coined the Powder
Puff Derby), a group of female
pilots who shared a common
bond decided to formalize
their group. They sent out an
invitation to join their group
on October 9, 1929, and held
their fi rst meeting on November
2nd, 1929 at Curtiss Field,
Valley Stream, NY. The meeting
was led by Amelia Earhart,
who was later elected
the fi rst president. Of the 117
licensed women pilots of the
day, 99 became charter members
of the organization and
took the name from the charter
member number, 99.
