AIRPORT VOICE,DECEMBER 2019 17
Beginning October

18 years of age and

ID-compliant driver’s
license, state-issued enhanced
driver’s license,
passport or another acceptable
form of ID to fl y
within the United States,
board any commercial
fl ight, even domestic ones,
REAL ID-compliant cards are
marked with a star at the top of the
card. If you’re not sure, contact your
state driver’s license agency on how
to obtain a REAL ID compliant card.
IN New York State You can get a
REAL ID at any time, but you will
need to go to a DMV Offi ce. You cannot
get a REAL ID online, by phone,
or through mail.
Real ID is not an alternate to a
passport. There is an Enhanced
Driver License (EDL) which is a
permit or non-driver ID , Federal
REAL ID compliant, accepted to
board a domestic fl ight (within the
US), enter military bases, and certain
federal facilities. It is proof of
identity and citizenship when exiting
and re-entering the United
States borders. It can be used use
instead of a passport from Canada,
Mexico and some countries in the
Caribbean.
NYS REAL ID will have a white
star on a black circle on the top
right.
State-issued EDLs are marked
with a fl ag on the bottom right.
These documents will be accepted
at the airport security checkpoint
when the REAL ID enforcement
goes into effect. NYS EDL is compliant
with the Western Hemisphere
Travel Initiative (WHTI).
So best to begin the process
now to be sure you have a REAL
ID, EDL or passport whenever
you travel within the US and adjacent
countries participating in the
WHTI.
Happy Holidays
to
Our Airport Customers.
