AIRPORT VOICE, AUGUST 2020 3
Resumption of services
Port, partners pave way
On June 22, JFK Airport General
Manager Charles Everett issued a vast
and comprehensive set of measures to
help the airport community begin a resumption
os services from the decimation
of business from Covid 19.
These measure include temperature
taking, omnipresent signage, facer
masking, face shields, protective Plexiglas
between transactions, endless supplies
of hand sanitizers, social distancing
, XpresCheck Covid testing facility
all designed for the safety and health of
the airport workers and passengers.
On a regular basis, the GM’s office
holds a stakeholders forum to review
previous initiatives, track the implementation
of measures put in place through
the airport by the Poet Authority. The
forum held on August 8 brought the community
together to discuss the progress
to date.
Everett said that “We are making
pretty good progress” . This was verified
in recent presentation to stakeholders
that will filled with green check marks
indicating compliance. Those in attendance
agreed with the state of preparedness
and implementation of important
health protocols.
According to Deputy GM Teresa Rizzuto,
these implementation are also for
“winning back the customers”.
A case in point is the TSA new procedure
of having their staff wear both
masks and face shields at all customer
facing positions. In addition, Plexiglas
partition will be in place at the security
checkpoints in September to “ help build
the confidence of the traveler” according
to a TSA spokesperson.
A major emphasis is placed on awareness
and participation in safety measures
.Expansive use of signage for maximizing
distance and minimizing touch
points is currently in place at all the terminals
guided by a strong mandate by
the Port. The Port is regularly tweaking
the messaging to insure comprehension
and understanding for the airport workers
and diverse travelers from other
countries.
Terminal 4 has an exhaustive list of
protocols in place including plans for a
more touchless marketplace. Other terminals
reporte3d they are in good shape.
Rizzuto said that our goal is to win
back customers.
The timetable on the GM presentation
is “Important to accomplish to bring
back customers” Rizzuto said. She added
this can not be done without the partnership
of the community.
Another walkthrough by the Port
was scheduled for August 12 and there
are terminal face covering exhibits each
week to interact with passengers and
demonstrate the airport’s concern for
their safety.
NYS Travel Advisory
Updated August 11
Governor Andrew M.
Cuomo today announced that
two additional states and Virgin
Islands meet the metrics
to qualify for the travel advisory
requiring individuals
who have traveled to New
York from those areas, all of
which have significant community
spread, to quarantine
for 14 days. The newly-added
states are Hawaii and South
Dakota. Alaska, New Mexico,
Ohio and Rhode Island have
been removed. The quarantine
applies to any person arriving
from an area with a
positive test rate higher than
10 per 100,000 residents over
a 7-day rolling average or
an area with a 10 percent or
higher positivity rate over a
7-day rolling average.
“New York went from one
of the worst situations in the
country, to an example for the
rest of the nation to follow,”
Governor Cuomo said. “Our
numbers continue to remain
low and steady, which shows
this virus will respond to an
approach based on science,
not politics. In order to protect
this progress, we must keep up
our efforts - we cannot go back
to the hell we experienced a
few months ago, which is why
we are adding Hawaii, South
Dakota and Virgin Islands to
the travel advisory.”
The full, updated travel advisory
list is below:
Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona,
California, Florida,
Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho,
Illinois, Indiana, Kansas,
Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland,
Minnesota, Missouri,
Mississippi, Montana, North
Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska,
Nevada, Oklahoma,
Puerto Rico, South Carolina,
South Dakota, Tennessee,
Texas Utah, Virginia, Virgin
Islands, Wisconsin
Removed from previous list
are Alaska, New Mexico, Ohio
and Rhode Island. Individuals
in quarantine after traveling
from a state that has been
removed from the advisory
should continue to quarantine
for the full 14 days.
NYS Department of Health
staff are located at domestic
arrivals areas to accept health
documentation forms from arriving
passengers at JFK Airport.

CEO’s Squawk talk Boeing, JetBlue outlooks
CEO JetBlue Robin Hayes
and Boeing CEO David Calhoun
appeared on Squawk
on the Street recently, Both
men held the same view that
a return to pre-covid aviation
business was a couple of years
out. And both spoke about the
terrible impact of the disease
on their respective workforces
and they hoped that Congress
would pass another aviation
supportive bill. This is in line
with the Port Authority that
has been seeking a $3 billion
Congressional aid package
that would allow for continuation
of important aviation infrastructure
projects.
Hayes stated that the current
liquidity of JetBlue is
adequate and they have options
for additional capital if
needed, but that their number
one priority is to preserve
cash burn; that the Cares Act
2.0 additional support the airline
industry is important
to protect jobs and the whole
tourism industry and supporting
services which contributes
greatly to the GDP; Jet-
Blue has to be nimble to deal
with the non-linear capacity
due to varying aspects of the
travel business and they are
fully prepared to act quickly;
they are excited about partnership
with American Airlines
which will bring connectivity
to passengers and
yet the two companies will remain
competitive in certain
markets, especially the new
anticipated NY to London Jet-
Blue route net year, and that
he is confident that airline
travel will increase but how
much and how fast is not clear.
Boeing CEO David Calhoun
said that the economic recovery
of the airline industry will
take 3 years to improve, that
Boeing is sufficiently capitalized
at the moment, that the
CARES act has been “kept the
US carriers alive” and very
important to the airline industry,
that he sees a likelihood of
new aircraft orders in the 2nd
qtr .of 2021, that he definitely
sees long term grown in the
industry. He sees industry
acceptance of the “Max” 737
because it is the safest plane
around ( according to Jim
Cramer) and ” according to
Calhoun the “tests process is
finishing in the right way”.
