New JFK Cafeteria
You are invited to a Job Fair August 17.
AIRPORT VOICE, AUGUST 2020 15
The cafeteria at JFK
Building 14 had been both a
food court as well as a gathering
spot for impromptu meetings
with members of various
organizations as they passed
through the administrative
building. Not only did the demise
of thee former tenant
impact these gatherings but
then Covid did as well.
So, for months the space
has been vacant, and no one
has a reason to pass through
or gather.
Now however, the Port
Authority announced its
partnership with J&P Runway
Café, a local minorityand
woman-owned business
(MWBE) to operate an onairport
employee cafeteria
inside Building 14 at JFK International
Airport.
J&P Runway Café is a
new venture spearheaded by
successful local Queens restaurateurs
Annette Runcie,
owner of Pa-Nash Restaurant,
and Michael Duncan,
owner of Jamaica Breeze
Restaurant. J&P Runway
Café has committed to hiring
local residents to work at the
cafeteria, slated to open in
September 2020.
“The Port Authority is
committed to investing back
in the New York and New
Jersey economy by ensuring
that local businesses and local
workers have access to
opportunities at the region’s
airports,” said Port Authority
Chairman Kevin O’Toole.
“The Port Authority
has embraced Governor
Cuomo’s nation-leading 30
percent goal for contracts
with Minority- and Women-
Owned Businesses,” said
Rick Cotton, Port Authority
Executive Director. “This
restaurant partnership
with J&P Runway Café is
part of the agency’s aggressive
MWBE program, and
we’re delighted to welcome
these experienced restauranteurs
to the JFK Airport
community.”
“Since the inception
of the Merchant Association
of Rosedale, Laurelton,
and Springfi eld Gardens
(MARLS), we have been committed
to training and advocating
on behalf of local
businesses,” said Annette
Runcie, co-partner of the J&P
Runway Café and founder of
MARLS. “Today’s announcement
is a win for the collective
community as we now
have the ability to hire workers
and engage local businesses
to partner right in our
community at JFK International
Airport.”
“Many JFK employees
live in and around Southeast
ABM Aviation Landside is so proud and grateful for the
wonderful job the essential workers from our parking, taxi
dispatch, and shuttle services have, and continue to provide,
during the COVID-19 crisis we are all experiencing.
Queens, so having local
restaurants preparing
meals is a bit like getting
home cooking,” said Hope
Knight, president and CEO
of the Greater Jamaica Development
Corporation, the
economic development entity
for the region. “It’s a
pleasure to have public sector
partners like the Cuomo
Administration and the
Port Authority who continue
to deliver on their
promises to this community
and create opportunities for
our small businesses.”
The new cafeteria in
Building 14 is expected to
serve over 700 employees
and visitors Monday – Friday
from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. The
newly renovated space is
over 5,000 square feet, will
provide ample room for distancing,
and offers indoor
and outdoor seating to workers.
It is also being built to
ensure safe dining conditions
for airport employees
during COVID-19.
Job fairs for open positions
for cafeteria cashiers,
line cooks and shift leaders
began this month. The next
job fair is August 17th from
1pm-6pm at Pa Nash restaurant.
The operators will also
