14 AIRPORT VOICE, AUGUST 2020
Community Camaraderie
Covid kills the human touch
JFK Airport has always been
a place of friendship, professional
courtesy, social and networking
organizations. Each year there
are hundreds of events where the
stakeholders and friends of the airport
come together to mix business
and social interactions.
It is a place where friendships
began with the first handshake decades
ago and where friendships
continue through the human interactions
at these events.
This year since March however
it has been different. We are
not physically meeting shaking
hands, seeing each others’ smiles
or laughs.
Covid has created isolation and
long distance virtual interactions.
Just not the same at all.
Gone are the days of physical
proximity at golf, Chamber of Commerce,
cargo, Port meetings and
all the rest of close personal interactions.
Now we meet occasional
through sometimes challenging
virtual meetings and seminars.
Sure, it is great to see everyone’s
face and their voice after
many months but nothing will
take the place of in-person camaraderie.
Here are a few of the past events
which we all gathered. Now the
physical closeness seems strange
but we all long for it.
Hopefully we will physically do
this again before the year is out,
with or without masks.
