Port Authority airports
have been one of the major
economic engines of our nation
and region for decades..
The workforce of the airports
and aviation business partners
has been the fuel of these
engines. With close to 70,000
individuals employed by all
these entities, the recent devastation
of our national economy
has impacted everyone.
It is important to remember
these people especially
those physically handling the
important cargo that has become
the lifeline both for our
healthcare institutions and
everyday life. Numerous aircraft
arrive daily at JFK and
Newark with tons of medical
products, medicines, food and
everyday important products
by handled by airport workers.
Many are minimum wage
earners and many hold second
jobs. They comprise the
ground handlers, air cargo
companies, security, terminal
support, air traffic, freight,
trucking, brokers, waste removing
companies that encompass
the fabric of the hidden,
behind the scenes hectic
and busy activity required
to keep our communities
healthy, fed and clothed.
Local organizations such
as Gateway JFK, Global Elite,
airlines, airport terminals,
elected officials and volunteers
have come together to
bring some relief and support
to these workers as well as the
local communities that provide
labor for our airports.
Here are some images of the
diversity of our workforce.
Thank you for your dedication
to your job, ability to deal with
challenges and continuing to
get us to the other side of the
current health and financial
crisis we are experiencing.
