When customs brokers,
freight forwarders, and other
workers who provide
logistical support to the JFK
air cargo industry return from
lockdown, they might be
surprised to see their
neighborhood looking fresh
and bright.
The neighborhood is neat and
tidy because over the month
of April, forty sanitation
workers swarmed the district
to remove 384 bags of litter
and debris, weighing a total
of 8,448 lbs. or 4.2 tons.
The cleanup was managed by
GatewayJFK, a business
improvement district who
directed the workers to clean
every street, sidewalk and
median inside their 215-acre
improvement area located
along Rockaway Blvd. in
Southeast Queens. The
cleanup event was able to
continue despite the New
York State lockdown,
because sanitation workers
are considered an essential
part of the economy.
Workers were encouraged to
follow social distancing
guidelines and wear masks at
all times.
Workers for the cleanup are
staff of Wildcat Services a
nonprofit that provides
transitional employment and
vocational training to public
assistance recipients,
justice-involved individuals
and residents of homeless
shelters.
In addition to litter,
GatewayJFK is actively
removing graffiti and other
eyesores from the area. In
April they removed 259
stickers and illegal signs that
promote “All Cash” sales of
homes, and/or other get rich
quick schemes.
GatewayJFK will continue to
provide street and sidewalk
cleaning, trash removal,
graffiti removal, and
landscaping services
throughout the year.
