Passengers must wear masks
Major airlines require health prevention
Major U.S. air carriers are requiring
passengers and crew to
wear face masks in an effort to
prevent the spread of the corona
virus.
United, JetBlue, American,
Delta, Hawaiian, Southwest, Frontier
and Alaska announced within
days of each other requiring passengers
to wear masks.
United was the first major U.S.-
based airline to require flight attendants
to wear a face mask while
on duty, and effective May 4 expanded
that mandate to include
all of our employees on board.
This will include front-line workers
like pilots, customer service
agents and ramp workers when on
board an aircraft, along with any
other United employees traveling
using their flight benefits. United
said that face coverings are mandatory
for all passengers, and they
will provide masks to passengers
for free. For the latest information,

Generally airline explain that
passengers must “wear a face mask
or covering that effectively covers
the mouth and nose, from checking
in at the airport to deplaning

at their destination.” It makes an
exemption for young children and
those with medical conditions that
prevent use of a face covering.
As for social distancing procedures,
the airlines also said they
will modify certain pre-flight and
in-flight processes beginning May
8. Passengers will be required to
remain seated at the gate until
boarding for their row is called.
Passengers in the main cabin will
board from the rear of the aircraft
in small groups.
Hawaiian Airlines already has
been increasing personal space
on its flights and plans to begin
blocking middle seats and other
select seats on aircraft next week
in order to further distance passengers
from one another.
The International Air Transport
Association (IATA), a trade
group representing airlines
around the world, has come out
against blocking off middle seats
on planes, while recommending
both passengers and crew members
wear face masks on board instead.
IATA is offering up other
suggestions for how everyone can
stay safe on board once commercial
air travel resumes.
T4 Masks for Education
When Terminal
4 airport employees
needed masks due to
low supply, JFKIAT
CEO Roel Huinink’
s wife, Floortje, was
happy to help as she
has previous experience
running a textile
company. She
sewed the masks by
hand for airport employees
who were
very enthusiastic
and soon wanted
more for family and
friends to wear. Once this demand
increased, Huinink and JFKIAT
decided this would be a great opportunity
to raise money and give
back to the T4 community, specifically
families at Virgil I. Grissom
Middle School, many of whom live
in transitional housing.
“I was happy to volunteer my
time and efforts in providing T4
employees with masks while creating
a positive impact on the community,”
said Floortje Huinink.
“JFKIAT has a long-standing relationship
with Virgil I. Grissom
Middle School and we want to help
these children and families in need
however we can during this time.”
