Long Island couple drown
at Far Rockaway beach
A Long Island couple died on the night
of Tuesday, July 9, aft er they were pulled
under water while one was teaching the
other to swim in Far Rockaway.
Authorities say that at 10:20 p.m. on
July 9, police responded to a 911 call
regarding a rescue at Beach Ninth Street
and Seagirt Boulevard. Upon their arrival,
offi cers from the 101st Precinct found
Umarie Chamble, 25, and Keylon Ramsay,
28, both of Inwood, NY, unconscious and
unresponsive in the water near the shore
line.
Sources familiar with the investigation
say that Chamble and Ramsay were
drinking with their friends that evening
and decided to go into the water
so Chamble could teach Ramsay how
to swim. Th e group saw Chamble and
Ramsay get pulled under the water and
when they surfaced, the two were unconscious.
Offi cers pulled the two victims from
the water and administered CPR. EMS
rushed Chamble and Ramsay to Saint
John’s Hospital, where they were both
pronounced dead.
Th e medical examiner will determine
the cause of death. Th ere are no arrests
and the investigation is ongoing.

Man wanted in connection
to Jackson Heights
pepper spray attack
Police need the public’s help in fi nding
a man wanted for questioning in
a recent Jackson Heights pepper spray
attack involving a woman.
Law enforcement sources said the
hate crime occurred at around 4:18 a.m.
on June 29 in the vicinity of Roosevelt
Avenue and 82nd Street.
According to authorities, the suspect —
identifi ed as 34-year-old David Gonzalez

— walked up to a 29-year-old woman
and dispensed pepper spray into her eyes,
then fl ed the scene in an unknown direction.
Sources familiar with the investigation
stated that Gonzalez had been involved
in an incident that occurred earlier that
morning in which 24-year-old Paola
Custodio allegedly attacked two transgender
activists with pepper spray in the
same area.
“We were doing a documentary in
Jackson Heights to demonstrate the violence
against transgender people and
high levels of police harassment,” Bianey
Garcia, one of the victims, said through
an interpreter at a July 1 press conference
about the hate crime. “Th ere was a
woman and a man who started harassing
us and saying slurs. Th ey called us ‘f—-
ts’ and then said women like us only promote
prostitution, but it is only because
of the clothes we were wearing.”
Law enforcement sources said that
Gonzalez attacked the 29-year-old
woman about an hour aft er Custodio
allegedly sprayed her victims. He allegedly
told the victim, “Th is is from before,”
and then sprayed the woman, authorities
noted.
Offi cers from the 110th Precinct and
EMS units responded to the scene.
Paramedics brought the victim to
Elmhurst Hospital for treatment.
Gonzalez stands at 6 feet tall and
weighs about 170 pounds. Th e NYPD
Hate Crimes Task Force, through the
Crime Stoppers program, is off ering a
$2,500 reward for information leading to
his arrest and conviction.

Suspect wanted for punching
man on E train in LIC
Cops are looking for a man who
punched someone on the train in Long
Island City in June.
According to police, at 6:05 a.m. on
June 27, a 39-year-old man was riding
a southbound E train. As the train was
approaching the Queens Plaza station,
the victim accidentally stepped on an
unknown man’s bag, which was on the
fl oor of the train.
Th e suspect proceeded to punch the
victim in the face, breaking the victim’s
glasses as a result.
Th e victim suff ered a small laceration
under his right eye. Th e victim left the
train at the Queens Plaza station and the
suspect remained onboard.
Th e suspect is described as black man
with a goatee, standing 5 feet, 7 inches
tall and weighing 160 pounds. He was
last seen wearing a dark-colored baseball
cap, a yellow shirt and blue pants.

Would-be burglar tries to
break in to Flushing home
Cops are looking for a crook who tried
to break into a Flushing home last week.
According to police, at 10:15 a.m. on
July 3, an unknown man broke into a
home in the vicinity of 27th Avenue and
Murray Street by breaking the screen
window. When the suspect noticed
that the property had security cameras,
he fl ed the scene empty-handed in an
unknown direction.
Police released surveillance video on
July 10 of the suspect prowling around
the property.
