FUN& &SAFETY DOG PARK FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com june 30, 2016 • KIDS & EDUCATION • The Cou rie r sun 37 D og Parks are great places for dogs to get exercise and have fun. It is also a great place for you and your pet to bond. Here AT THE are some tips for keeping your trip to the dog park safe and fun: Before taking your dog to the park you should make sure they will get along with other dogs. If your pet doesn’t get along with other pets, he/she may get into a fi ght. Keep your dog leashed if they don’t listen to you. That will help keep them from running away. Make sure your pet’s toe nails are clipped and not overgrown. Many dogs when running around will break a toe nail which is very painful and may lead to a veterinary visit. Always keep an eye on your dog so that way they don’t end up eating goose feces or some other stuff off the ground. Make sure that your dog always has access to water and shade. Make sure they don’t overwork themselves. If they do too much in the heat, they can get heat stroke. Don’t forget that fl eas and ticks can be found in many parks across the United States, including Long Island, Queens, and New York City. Make sure you have fl ea and tick preventative. Heartworm disease is becoming a bigger problem across the United States. It’s transmitted by a mosquito and it’s not easily treated. However, it is easily PREVENTED with heartworm medication. Be certain your pet has this preventative medication. And, of course, always keep your dog up to date on their vaccines. The vaccines help prevent many of the viruses that your dog could contract at a park. The Rabies vaccine is required by state law in New York. Hopefully these tips will help keep your family outing to the park with your pet safe and fun.
