Broad Channel and the Rockaways are receiving the bulk of the 40 new baskets being introduced to Ulrich’s 32nd City Council District. The baskets feature closed tops and sides, allowing only for small pieces of litter. The enclosures aim to prevent the illegal dumping of household and commercial trash, while protecting the garbage from wind that may blow it onto the street. “These new litter baskets will help keep our community clean,” Ulrich said in a statement on Monday, June 13. “Clean streets mean a better business environment and a better quality of life for all residents.” Merchants and civic leaders in Broad Channel praised the arrival of the baskets, which will be placed largely along Cross Bay Boulevard, the island neighborhood’s main shopping strip. “They’re good for our neighborhood and they’re good for business,” said Rob Pisani, owner of the All American Channel Market. “They will help to keep our town clean and they are designed to ensure that the trash is not seen, presenting a much more pleasing aesthetic look than the old open trash cans of the past,” added Dan Mundy Jr., president of the Broad Channel Civic Association.
