The Belmont Stakes, which capped a card full of major stakes races, came down to the wire, with Creator nosing out Destin for the victory. The St. John’s Red Storm baseball team has sent another player to the majors, as the Cincinnati Reds selected infielder Ty Blankmeyer in the 36th round — 1,068th overall — in the 2016 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft. Blankmeyer joins pitcher Thomas Hackimer, who was selected in the fourth round with the 123rd overall pick by the Minnesota Twins in this year’s draft class. The infielder appeared in 128 games for St. John’s, including 73 starts over four seasons. He scored 48 runs, totaled four doubles, 25 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 15 attempts. He managed to post a career-high .408 on-base percentage this past season, while batting .241 with two doubles, five RBI and 11 runs scored. Blankmeyer’s fielding prowess was on display during all throughout 2016 season. After winning the 2015 Rawlings “Finest in the Field” Award as the top defensive second baseman in the Northwoods League, Blankmeyer recorded a career-high .984 fielding percentage this year, with a combined .980 fielding percentage over the last two seasons.
