The block of 242nd Street between 138th and North Conduit avenues was renamed James English Way, honoring the late civic leader who formerly led the Rosedale Civic Association. He was also an active member of the Rosedale Civilian Patrol, the Rosedale AARP and the Eastern Queens Alliance; the latter organization is a coalition of civic groups in the eastern half of the “World’s Borough” dedicated to addressing quality-of-life issues. English was also a founding member of Safe Aviation for Everyone (SAFE) and the Queens Coalition for Parks and Green Spaces. Through SAFE, English helped secure an environmental grant toward pollution monitoring systems in area waterways. Members of English’s extended family and friends joined Councilman Donovan Richards on the block to celebrate English’s many contributions to the community. “James English was a true community advocate who helped shape nearly every community organization in Rosedale,” Richards said. “He was truly a shining example of the Rosedale community, which is why it is so important that he is remembered for all his efforts throughout the neighborhood.” Richards was a co-sponsor of the bill passed last year by the City Council renaming 51 public places across the city for people and institutions that have made a profound and positive impact on the city through the years.
