Whitestone native celebrates her hundredth birthday
Eleanore Catena is a vibrant woman
who soon turns 100 years young. Her
interests are dancing, sewing, playing the
mandolin, bowling, shopping, and the
culinary arts. Eleanore emigrated to the
United States in 1935 with her parents,
Genoveff a and Salvatore. She yearned
to follow in her mother’s footsteps who
owned a general store on the island of
Ponza, where she was born in 1918.
At the age of 40, she opened a Seafood
Emporium in Whitestone. Eleanore and
her husband, Vincent worked long hours
to earn enough money to give their three
children a college education and professions
in Education and Medicine.
In 1962, she was nominated “Queen
For a Day” for her unusual occupation
for a woman. Th e show was fi lmed at the
World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows Park.
Eleanore treasures her three wonderful
children and their spouses, fi ve
grandchildren, nine great grandchildren,
family, friends, and doctors that
have helped her enjoy her last remaining
years in her own home in Nesconset.
NYPD’s Prom Impact helps
Queens teens in need fi nd
dresses for big night

Prom season is approaching.
Help a high school senior in need
fi nd their dream dress by donating
a dress to “Prom Impact 2018.”
Th e NYPD’s 113th Precinct is
hosting Prom Impact 2018, which
supplies free prom dresses and
men’s formal wear to young people
in need.
Prom Impact will be held at the
Eddie Byrne PAL Center, located
at 116-25 Guy R. Brewer Blvd.
on May 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
During this time, high school
seniors who can’t aff ord prom
attire from across New York City
can come and pick up a free dress,
shoes and accessories for their big
night.
Donations are currently being
accepted at the 113th Precinct,
located at 167-02 Baisley Blvd. in
Rochdale. For more information,
