Queens World hosts 11th annual
Young Filmmakers Program at P.S. 69
BY WILLIAM HARRIS
Since 2008, the Queens World Film
Festival has orchestrated its Young
Filmmakers Program at PS 69Q - Th e
School of Cultural and Performing Arts
in Jackson Heights. Every year the QWFF
sends its own fi lmmaker mentors and
industry professionals to help the fi ft h
grade students learn what the fi lmmaking
industry is all about.
Th roughout the program, students
are taught about how to produce narrative
short fi lms with the help of their
QWFF instructors. In 2017, the program
was focused on the theme of character.
Th e students were split into four
groups, where each would produce a
fi lm based on an experience they had
to build on their own character. As a
result, the four groups fi lmed four short
fi lms called “Courage”, “Th e Bird”, “Th e
Ticking Timer” and “Zoey”s Big Money”.
Th e fi lms ended up ranging from four to
seven minutes. Th e Queens World Film
Festival’s website also shows past years
student fi lms from 2011 to this past year’s
in 2017.
Th is year’s program is scheduled on the
school’s website for Friday, Mar. 9. Once
the students are taught about the fundamentals
of fi lming and given their task,
they will also produce short fi lms of their
own. Th e best part is, these fi lms will premier
at a mauve carpet event at PS 69Q on
Friday, Mar. 16, at 8:45 a.m. Th e school
is located at 77-02 37th Ave., Jackson
heights.
Th e Queens World Film Festival is looking
to expand their Youth Filmmakers
Program to other schools in the Queens
