An Ozone Park mailman was charged this week for allegedly throwing out 1,000 holiday cards and gifts that he was responsible for delivering in the neighborhood earlier this month. According to a complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn, Daniel Darby, 25, said that he was overwhelmed by the amount of mail he had to deliver on Dec. 2. He then went to a Stop and Shop supermarket on Cross Bay Boulevard and bought several white garbage bags, which he filled with mail and then dumped in a garbage can at a residential address. The bags of mail were discovered about two days later on Dec. 4, in the same area where Darby was responsible for delivering mail. Members of the U.S. Postal Service’s Office of Inspector General questioned Darby on Dec. 7, when he allegedly confessed to having discarded the mail. Additionally, authorities said, he also confessed to ripping open some of the mail to see what it contained. Darby was arraigned on Dec. 29 on charges of delaying and destroying mail and released on $50,000 bail. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. 104TH PRECINCT Ridgewood, Glendale, Middle Village, Maspeth, LibertyPark Bombshell: Maspeth strip club gets blasted with Molotov cocktails Things at one Maspeth strip club got a little too hot early in the morning of Dec. 31. The CityScapes Gentleman’s Club — which a New York Knicks player visited before he was robbed and shot in the knee on the morning of Dec. 30— was hit with two Molotov cocktails at 5:34 a.m. Thursday, authorities said. Police are searching for two suspects wanted for tossing the fiery concoctions through the club’s windows, setting a fire within the establishment located at 55-60 58th St. Sources familiar with the investigation said the suspects reportedly fled southbound on 58th Street inside a Nissan Altima. Officers from the 108th Precinct and FDNY units responded to the incident and extinguished the flames. No injuries were reported and an investigation is ongoing. The probe also continues into the robbery and shooting of Cleanthony Early, a Knicks bench player whose cab was ambushed on Maurice Avenue near Tyler Avenue early on Wednesday morning moments after he left CityScapes. He was shot in the knee during the incident and is listed in stable condition. Anyone with information regarding the robbery or the Molotov cocktail attack that could prove helpful is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS. 106TH PRECINCT Howard Beach, South Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Tudor Village and Lindenwood South Ozone Park accident victim dies of injuries A 73-year-old man who was struck by a car at a South Ozone Park intersection last month has died of his injuries, police reported. According to police, Ramnauth Mahabir of 115th Street in South Ozone Park was struck by a SUV at the corner of 115th Street and Rockaway Boulevard at 9:45 a.m. on Dec. 12, 2015. Reportedly, Mahabir suffered head injuries after being hit by a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado driven by a 58-year-old male traveling northbound on 115th Street as it turned left onto Rockaway Boulevard. Officers from the 106th Precinct and EMS units responded to the scene. Mahabir was rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where he died on Dec. 30. No arrests have been made, and an inquiry by the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad is ongoing, police said. Photo by Robert Stridiron Three arrested for machete assault on Ridgewood street Three individuals remain locked up on assault and robbery charges for allegedly attacking a 21-year-old man with a machete during a New Year’s Day mugging at a Ridgewood street corner, prosecutors said. Hamler DeJesus, 19, of Ridgewood and William Gonzalez, 22, of Ozone Park, along with an unidentified 14-year-old male juvenile offender, were arrested shortly after the bloody mugging, which occurred at 3:18 a.m. on Jan. 1 at the corner of St. Nicholas Avenue and Palmetto Street. According to information that the Queens District Attorney’s office provided, the three suspects and four unidentified perpetrators approached the victim at the scene, then punched him about the body and knocked him to the ground. One of the defendants then pulled out a machete and slashed the victim numerous times, police said, cutting the victim’s face, right shoulder, back and chest. During the assault, authorities noted, the perpetrators removed the victim’s right earring, two gold chains from his neck and $200 in cash from his pants pockets. Officers from the 104th Precinct came upon the mugging in progress and apprehended DeJesus, Gonzalez and the juvenile offender, sources familiar with the investigation stated. They were each subsequently charged on first-degree counts of gang assault, assault and robbery, as well as seconddegree robbery and criminal possession of a weapon. All three suspects were arraigned on New Year’s Day before Judge Gia Morris; Gonzalez was ordered held on $25,000 bail, while DeJesus and the juvenile offender were each ordered held on $10,000 bail. They are scheduled to return to court on Jan. 13. Others involved in the mugging remain at large, and the investigation is ongoing, prosecutors said.
