As the Health Department announced on July 31, the organization’s selection clears a major hurdle in the state’s implementation of provisions in the Compassionate Care Act enacted in 2014, which authorized the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes in New York State. The medical marijuana program is on target for implementation by January 2016, about 18 months after Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the bill into law. MOM CHARGED WITH THROWING INFANT SON OUT OF WINDOW TO HIS DEATH The mother of a 3-week-old boy whose body was found in a Richmond Hill apartment building’s courtyard was been charged with murder after allegedly throwing the child out a four-story window because she believed an evil spirit had taken over the boy’s body. Rashida Chowdhury, 21, was arrested and charged with seconddegree murder and intentional murder of a victim less than 11 years old. A witness told authorities that just before 4 a.m. on Aug. 7 she had heard an unusual noise like a “thump” coming from the courtyard at 85-55 115th St., according to court documents. The witness then went to the lobby area of the building, looked through a window to the courtyard and saw a baby lying on the cement floor unresponsive and with an apparent injury to the head. NYPD rescues two jet skiers in the Rockaways Two NYPD officers came to the rescue of a pair of jet skiers after they were swept up in a strong current near the Rockaways on Aug. 8, according to police. The trouble started when the male jet skiers, ages 21 and 28, ran out of gas in the water off of Beach Ninth Street and Seagirt Boulevard. One man was holding onto the jet ski while the other, who was adrift in the current, wore a loose life vest that was unable to properly keep him afloat. Police Officers Matthew Carson and Christopher Carlino rescued the jet skiers. Motivate, the company that operates Citi Bike, the Department of Transportation and local elected officials and leaders gathered on Aug. 5 to cut the ribbon on the borough’s firstever Citi Bike station located on Center Boulevard right on the waterfront.
