QMA Queens lawmakers celebrate Supreme Court same-sex marriage decision In a 5-4 decision issued on the morning of June 26, the court overturned state-imposed bans on same-sex marriage. The court ruled that gay and lesbian couples have the right to marry under the 14th Amendment through the Due Process and Equal Protection clauses. The court was ideologically split in its decision, as Justice Anthony Kennedy – regarded as its most moderate member – sided in the majority with the court’s four liberal justices: Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Stephen Breyer. The conservative wing – Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Antonin Scalia and Samuel Alito – voted in the minority. Major renovations for Queens Boulevard Queens Boulevard, also known as the boulevard of death, received a drastic makeover. The fi rst phase of the redesign project focused on the 1.3-mile section of Queens Boulevard between Roosevelt Avenue and 73rd Street, an area which saw six deaths, 36 severe injuries and 591 more hurt in traffi c accidents between 2009 and 2013. The redesign of the thoroughfare was created to decrease drivers from switching repeatedly between the main line and service road. The overall plan focused on the removal of the “highway-like design features” which encourage drivers to speed.
