6 times • MAY 19, 2016 FOR BREAKING NEWS VISIT www.qns.com Rego Park bank, which got burglarized through a hole in the roof, is not legally liable for stolen deposit boxes BY ROBERT POZARYCKI [email protected] @robbpoz The Rego Park bank where safe deposit boxes were compromised during a daring burglary over the weekend remains closed as detectives continue to investigate the crime. According to police, the suspect(s) cut a hole into the roof of the Maspeth Federal Savings at 64-19 Woodhaven Blvd. sometime during the weekend. They reportedly entered the vault, then removed cash along with a number of safe deposit boxes. Many of the boxes, some of which had their contents removed, were found across the roof by 112th Precinct officers just after 8:30 a.m. on May 23. A bank employee called police after discovering the hole in the roof while opening the branch for business. As of May 24, neither police nor Maspeth Federal could confirm how much was stolen, or the approximate time of when the break-in occurred. The branch normally operates on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is closed on Sundays. Detectives are looking to obtain security camera footage from nearby homes and businesses in the hope that the devices caught images of potential suspects, a source familiar with the investigation said. According to a statement from Maspeth Federal, the branch will remain closed over the next several days as investigators continue their probe. Customers who kept safe deposit boxes at the location will be notified if they were compromised “and when they can regain access to them.” Safe deposit boxes are normally used by individuals to store precious items such as jewelry or important personal documents; cash may not be stored. By law, however, the bank is not liable for the content in the boxes. “We know that safe deposit boxes are often used to hold items that, more important than their financial value, have personal value,” the statement noted. “We are hopeful that the breach will have only affected a limited portion of the boxes rented on site, and for those that were breached, that some of the items may have been left behind by the perpetrators and be recoverable after the police finish investigating. This is an unfortunate day for the community, but we are hopeful the authorities will bring the perpetrators to justice.” The NYPD Major Case Squad is conducting the investigation. New homeless shelter to open in Bushwick in June By Emilie Ruscoe [email protected] @emiliesaysthat A former rehab facility on Bushwick’s DeKalb Avenue is about to reopen as a 100-bed homeless shelter. The facility aims to effectively cater to the unique needs and concerns of the Bushwick community. The building at 1154 DeKalb Ave., which formerly housed the organization Damon House, will open in June as a temporary homeless shelter. In two years, the shelter will become permanent supportive housing. Priority at the facility will be given to clients with last addresses in Bushwick and Bed-Stuy as Department of Homeless Services (DHS) has more than 3,000 individuals in the system with previous addresses in the two neighborhoods. Additionally, the city has committed to ensuring that more than half of the open jobs at the facility go to locals. The facility will be operated by the Bronx-based Neighborhood Association for Inter-Cultural Affairs, a non-for-profit organization with a holistic approach to homeless services which includes “affordable housing development and construction, housing management, legal assistance and representation, homeless prevention and stabilization, case management/ case work, and community education and development.” The shelter, which DNAinfo reports is widely welcomed among surveyed neighbors, will not offer specialized services for substance abuse or mental health issues, though it will offer other services and programming for clients. The shelter will only house single adult men, and officials have emphasized that it will not house sex offenders—the facility is located across the street from the EBC High School for Public Service—and will have ‘round-the-clock security. The opening of the shelter is among the steps the city is taking to address a situation that that has recently been characterized as a “homeless epidemic.” Citing a recent comprehensive review of homeless services called for by the de Blasio administration, NYC Department of Social Services Commissioner Steven Banks called the new shelter a part of DHS’ efforts to develop “new solutions to rehousing homeless New Yorkers.” Photo via Google Maps The Maspeth Federal Savings bank on Woodhaven Boulevard in Rego Park was burglarized this weekend.
