The commercial strip is home to businesses that have been a part of Maspeth for decades, as well as brand new shops that have recently opened or are opening up in the near future. Some of the mainstays on Grand Avenue include Maspeth Federal Savings’ main branch, located at 56-18 69th St. on the corner of Grand Avenue, which opened in 1947, and Papavero Funeral Home, located at 72-27 Grand Ave., which opened for business in Maspeth in 1960. One way businesses continue to fl ourish on Grand Avenue is through the help of the Maspeth Chamber of Commerce. “The Maspeth Chamber of Commerce serves as a liaison for the community and business owners,” said Joseph A. Papavero, treasurer of the Maspeth Chamber of Commerce. “We host different events on Grand Avenue to help promote local businesses along Grand Avenue.” One such event is the Grand Avenue Street Festival, which is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 12 this year. The festival closes down Grand Avenue to vehicular traffi c for one day for merchants to promote their businesses and for the community to come out and have a good time. The Chamber is also responsible for making Grand Avenue a better place for the community. It has helped fund community projects like the Doe Fund, which helps cleans up the corridor, Papavero said. The Chamber sponsors the holiday lights across the avenue, the spring and fall banners that are sponsored by the businesses, and the tree lighting at corner of Grand Avenue and 69th Street.
