The New York City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) has announced that the long-awaited construction of combined sewer and water main Penelope Avenue project was set to begin on Monday, May 23. The $22 million project will upgrade and improve the aging infrastructure and water distribution system along Penelope Avenue and the connecting streets by replacing water mains, as well as the fire hydrants and manholes, where necessary. Work is scheduled to take place on the following blocks: - 74th Street between Juniper Boulevard South and Juniper Valley Road; - Juniper Valley Road between 74th Street and 77th Street; - 75th Street between Juniper Valley Road and 66th Drive; - 66th Road between Gray Street and 77th Street; • Gray Street between Juniper Valley Road and 66th Drive; • 77th Street between Gray Street and Juniper Valley Road; • Penelope Avenue between 71st Street and 74th Street; and • Juniper Boulevard South between 74th and 75th Street. Construction is set to take place during typical work hours, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, night and weekend work may be necessary during the span of the project. DDC will give advanced notice before any work is done outside of the normal working hours. During the course of this project, there will be water service i n t e r r u p t i o n s . DDC will provide advance notification for all planned interruptions. However, emergency water service interruptions may be necessary. In those instances, advanced notice cannot be given. Instead, door-todoor notification will be given as quickly as possible and the contractor will remain on the site until water service is restored. Traffic flow on the blocks being worked on will be disrupted as well with street closures and detours for both cars and buses. Advanced notice for any and all interruptions will be posted. This will also lead to restricted curbside parking and driveway access along the construction route, DDC announced. No parking restrictions will be in effect and no parking signs will be posted throughout the affected area. Vehicles parked in no-parking zones will be towed by the contractor. Emergency vehicle access and pedestrian access to sidewalk and entry ways will be maintained at all times. The anticipated completion of this project is scheduled for spring 2018.
