Assembly Democrats quickly coalesced around Bronx Assemblyman Carl Heastie after the indicted Silver announced his intention to resign the leadership post he held for the last 20 years. They made it official on Tuesday, Feb. 3, as Heastie was overwhelmingly elected the state’s first black speaker. The vote came a day after Nolan—the last holdout after several other speaker hopefuls dropped out and backed Heastie—conceded in a statement Monday, Feb. 2, she lacked the necessary votes to attain the speakership. The 30-year representative of the 37th District—which includes Ridgewood, Maspeth, Middle Village, Sunnyside, Woodside, Long Island City and Astoria— sought to become the first woman to lead the chamber. “I am as aware of the historic nature of Assemblyman Carl Heastie’s candidacy as I am of my own,” Nolan stated. “I believe that I have put at least a scratch in the glass ceiling for women. I congratulate Assemblyman Heastie and I understand the joy that his election will bring to all communities of our state.” As previously reported, Silver was indicted last month on charges that he allegedly concocted two bribery schemes. Under intense pressure from his own colleagues, he announced last week he would step down from the speakership but remain in his legislative seat representing Lower Manhattan.
