Sophomore forward Kristen Deer is third in the division with 110 offensive rebounds, and 10th in the division with 234 total rebounds. Sarah Edwards, freshman forward, is sixth overall with 102 offensive rebounds. The CUNY Championship Playoffs begin Tuesday, Feb. 17, and coachAnthonyAlfaro has his team ready for the challenge ahead. “We have a motto in the second half of this crazy season: ‘one game at a time,’” Alfaro said. “We look at our inefficiencies and attack them, mentally and physically at every remaining practice until the championships.” Alfaro believes, “our success lies within our post play.We need to limit our turnovers as well to have success,” in the playoffs. Trip to Boston The Lady Red Hawks split their last two non-conference games in Boston. On Satuday, Jan. 31 they dropped the contest against Bunker Hill Community College, 64-50. The team rebounded nicely and defeated Bristol Community College 83-51 on Sunday, Feb. 1. Shooting down cancer The LAGCC Lady Red Hawks will hold a fundraiser game on Friday, Feb. 13, to raise money to fight women’s cancer. The public is invited to watch the Lady Red Hawks will face off against Valley Forge Military Academy in LAGCC’s gymnasium from 7 to 9 p.m. They will be accepting donations to help reach their goal of raising $1,000. All contributions will go to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, as part of its Play 4 Kay initiative. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund was founded by basketball coach Kay Yow, who died in 2009 of breast cancer. She joined with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and The V Foundation for Cancer Research to form a charitable organization dedicated to fighting women’s cancers.
