WWW.QNS.COM RIDGEWOOD TIMES JANUARY 26, 2017 15 CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK TACHS test helps get you into a Catholic high school -BY MCGEORGE SORENSEN For many eighth-graders across Queens who took last November’s TACHS exam, this is an anxious time, as they await the results of the entrance exam for Catholic high schools across Queens and Brooklyn. The results will be announced in February, and the grades play a signifi cant role in helping Catholic high school principals determine which students to accept for the freshman year in September. Formally known as the Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools, the TACHS is usually given in Brooklyn and Queens on the fi rst Saturday of November each year. It is open to eighth-graders enrolled in public or private school who are interested in attending a Catholic high school. Much like the SAT for college entrance, the TACHS is a general skills test that measures a student’s reading comprehension, written expression, mathematical prowess and reasoning ability. It is only administered once; there are no makeup dates. The TACHS scores for each student are sent to Catholic high school principals. While the TACHS scores have considerable weight in the Catholic high schools admissions process, it is not the only criteria by which admissions decisions are made. School principals also take into consideration a student’s overall academic record and other information. Each high school maintains its own admissions process and policy. Parents of students who will be heading to the eighth grade this September should start preparing their children for the test soon. Registration for the test will begin this August, and a fee will be charged (the 2016 TACHS fee was $63 per student).
